Device freezes solution

Does you device freezes inexplicably after a while without explanation?

The explanation is that the device firmware looks for the wdtvlive.com once in a while and if the website is down after a while the device freezes.
you can read detailed explanation here: https://community.wd.com/t/cause-freezi ... 137211/113

the problem looked fixed server side by WesternDigital but it seems that once in a while the website is down causing the device to freeze.

the solution I created is to block the website with the hosts file of the device
you can manually edit /etc/hosts and add:
Code: Select all
0.0.0.0 wdtvlive.com
0.0.0.0 www.wdtvlive.com

but then when you reboot the device it goes away.

A permanent solution is to create a file (via File Manager in the web-interface, via telnet, via ftp, etc...) in the directory /etc/init.d/ called for example S99wdtvlive-fix with the following code inside:
Code: Select all
#!/bin/bash

#fix for the wdtvlive.com website being down and fucking-up the device
echo "0.0.0.0 wdtvlive.com" >> /etc/hosts
echo "0.0.0.0 www.wdtvlive.com" >> /etc/hosts

the code adds the blocking rules every time you boot-up the device and block the website requests preventing your device to freeze.

Hope this info is helpful, cheers.

Nice find. My WDTV didn't freeze yet, but I guess I need to power it up first :D
