WDLXTV-0.5.8.1 crash while play movie on lan or ftp transfer

Postby nikkos » Mon Feb 06, 2012 7:55 am

Hello,
This is my first post but I have read most of your posts in this forum.
I have a WD TV Gen 1 and a Gigabit USB to Ethernet Adapter (AXIS 88178).
I have installed WDLX latest firmware and I am able to obtain an IP by using asix-gigabit-drivers.app.
Moreover, I can ssh/telnet, ftp, nfs, samba, webserver. In general, I can do everything!
But...not for long! When I watch a movie (by using NFS) after a while it crashes.
When I have a FTP transfer (ie a file 300Mb) my transfer speed is about 3.5Mb/s but after a while (when the transfer is about 100Mb) I have decrease in speed until it crashes.

Furthermore, after installing the WDLX firmware I have even problem watching a movie from a USB (especially 720 or 1080).
This is the main reason why I believe the problem is not the usb2lan adapter

It has to be something with the WD free memory. By using TOP, before I stream the memory is:
Mem: 60288K used, 47748K free, 0K shrd, 10360K buff, 31120K cached

after a while (streaming)
Mem: 105180K used, 2856K free, 0K shrd, 7088K buff, 71004K cached

when the available free memory is over my system crashes. I suppose, the reason is that the system keeps writing data in its memory (it has 100mb memory). What is the sollution?

It is really annoying, to know that so many people are able to stream/transfer files with this device while I cannot. I have spent a number of hours trying to make it work without success. What do I do wrong?
I can send you whatever info you need (TOP, messages.txt, dmesg.txt, system.txt)

Thanks

Am I the only one who encounter such an issue?
What do I do wrong?
Is it something with my installation?

I can't remember ever having experienced what you are describing

Hi Nikkos,

It sounds like you have a memory leak and the system resets itself to recover.

Here is a theory I have:
I am using a wireless dongle that uses the rt73 chipset, who's driver rt73.ko causes a memory leak when used with WDlxTV and the system freezes.
see http://wdtvforum.com/main/index.php?topic=5111.0
It may eventually have reset for me, but I never waited long enough to find out.

So, I am wondering if your usb to ethernet gigabit is supported or not, or has some bad driver interraction, which may cause the memory leak.

So, what driver does your dongle use? Have you tried a different usb to ethernet, one that is not gigabit?
And can you post your messages.txt?

Hi malber4,

thank you for your reply!

I use the "USB 2.0 10/100/1000M Lan Network Adapter" http://www.lohastek.com/products-read.asp?id=259.

If I dont load the asix-gigabit-drivers.app.bin I am not able to connect to the WD. The device can recognize the usb2ethernet but it stays down (eth0: ax8817x - Link Status is: 0)

When I load the asix-gigabit-drivers.app.bin by editing the net.config

SUPPRESS_OTHERS=yes
LOAD=asix_updated

I am able to stream over lan but not for long. It lasts about ~20 minutes or less and afterwards it crashes. As you can see in the messages.txt it loses the connection.

Any idea? Do you think it is an adapter problem?
Which adapter do you have or suggest?
i.e. Belkin Gigabit USB 2.0 Network Adapter http://www.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=281799?
In general, guys can you suggest me an ethernet to usb adapter that works fine with the WD Gen1?

Thank you again!

Re: WDLXTV-0.5.8.1 crash while play movie on lan or ftp tran

Postby malber4 » Tue Feb 21, 2012 5:43 pm

Hi nikkos,

I currently am not running on a Gigabit network. I have gotten my wdtv working on a 100mbps network using wireless, but now I switched to wired and got it working that way instead (seems a little more stable for me, my wireless driver didn't play nice with the wdtv). My hard wired 10/100 usb ethernet adaptor is the trendnet TU2-ET100 (I don't know what driver it uses, but apparently B-Rad included that driver in his boot up network drivers).

That being said, the only thing I can think of for you, since it starts working, is the MTU. Do you have it set to 9000 to support Gigabit frames? And what's your router set at? And many NAS devices have an MTU setting as well.

I have tried different MTU ie 9000 1500 and 1400 either connected in a gigabit or 100mb network. So I dont think that MTU will solve my problem.
I think the problem is with my adapter. I ordered the Belkin Gigabit USB to ethernet adapter. I hope that this adapter will solve my problem without the need to load any external driver.
I will inform you!

Thanks again!
