External Media Server for WDTV

Postby extremedigital » Fri Nov 12, 2010 2:42 pm

Hi Guys this is a question i have been meaning to ask for a while.

Basically i have used a few media servers with the wdtv, from the one built into windows 7, xbmc, orb, tversity and playon.

My favourite of the lot has to the can download a free 14 day from here

Basically you install it on a pc in your network and you can stream from various sites to the wdtv. From Hulu, Pandora, Espn, Neflix etc can also get additional plugin to add more streams than the offical built in ones eg you can get a bbc iplayer plugin, nbc, thecw etc etc

Now the really useful part is if you use a vpn eg the free hotspot shield you don't have to be in the usa to get them to play on your wdtv....

Also as there is now a new free vpn for the uk from the same guys called expat shield you can also stream uk geolocked program as well...(this is useful for any of you guys that want to watch any of the catch up tv from the uk, eg bbc iplayer or itv player)

(unfortunately at the moment you cannot have both installed at the same time you have to install and reinstall which version you want uk or usa)

Now my 14 trial is long expired and i have been meaning to pay for the full version cost $79.99 as i find the program so useful.

However i was thinking that i wonder if anyone here was interested in building an external server for the wdtv ..a little like umsp but we can then add the streams we want to it...if this is not possible then i will go ahead and get the full version of playon, which i highly reccomend to anyone...

Btw i recommend a program called for a really nice gui for the uk catchup tv

and Hulu desktop for the usa ones

Dont forget to have your vpn running when you install the can switch the vpn off when not needed

Look at TVersity. It can do online streaming, and the Pro version is far less expensive. Back when I was using my PS3 as a DLNA client, I would stream Shoutcast to it by using Tversity.

Hi RMerlin, i have TVersity Pro on my system however i dont find it as easy (nice) to use as Playon.....

Looks like i may have to bite the bullet and get the full version...

Its just that i wondered if there were any coders on here interested in developing a wdtv specific media server. However i am aware that kinda goes against the grain as far as most of the work has been done to intergrate the solutions into the wdtv box opposed to having an external solution :D

I can vouch for Playon as well. I really enjoy all the features and additional plugins you can find for it.

They are very active at making improvements and solving issues. Even Netflix works on it for those of us with the Live. (they just got it working for Canadians as well)

I am using PlayOn as well with my WDTV. ESPN3 is what I use it for most of the time and now they are offering NFL Rewind for those interested.

Well i finally got the licence for playon (i left it to last minute but decided to dive in)

first thing i noticed was a nice surprise one of the scripts called scrIPTV has added a great service called film*n which currently streams live tv channels.

the script can be had here:- i looked at the code and i am sure one you talented people could use it

in fact i am sure alot of the scripts on would be useful

i also noticed that my other favourite media server orb now allows you to stream hulu as well as the normal internet streams they had before.

you will need the new version of the orbcaster software ver 3.03 + (ps the really good part is that orb is free)

you can get it from here:-

the one major downside i found with the orb streaming of hulu is that if you use the free hotspot shield vpn you cannot get rid of the advert banner as the stream is done via a web browser and hotspot shield will add a banner to the top of the browser normally this isn't a problem as you can get rid of it but via the media renderer eg the wdtv live you cannot :|

Agreed - the plugin functionality does make playon the more favourable option.

However I agree with you, there is nothing here that could not be replicated on the Live through UMSP i'd imagine.
All we need is some budding coders to port some of the work already done by the guys over at!

Here might be a good place to start!!! ;)

I was staggered to find a plugin for one of my favourite sites TV links:

What they've done here is truly amazing! I couldn't believe how refined it was also!

Thanks for posting this extremedigital as I've being looking for something that could play TV Links shows through my live now for some time!

I truly think this could open up a whole nother world for the live if some of this could be ported to UMSP. It would be so nice to make it standalone and not have to have server PC in the background running everything!
