Hey mad_ady,

I've started testing per your instructions, here are some details:

1. I had already installed 0.5.2.1 (final, not beta) on Plus before starting, but it seemed like you needed me to run from the USB version, so I booted from there instead.

2. The mount point was not /tmp/mnt/your-usb-disk-uuid but rather /boot

3. # dd if=/dev/zero of=root.bin bs=1M count=650
dd: can't open 'root.bin': Read-only file system

4. So I figured I should try booting from Plus then mounted the USB.

5. Changed to mount point: /tmp/media/usb/USB1/2044CA7344CA4AEC

6. # dd if=/dev/zero of=root.bin bs=1M count=650
650+0 records in
650+0 records out
681574400 bytes (650.0MB) copied, 52.021652 seconds, 12.5MB/s

7. # mkfs.ext3 root.bin
mke2fs 1.41.9 (22-Aug-2009)
root.bin is not a block special device.
Proceed anyway? (y,n) y
Filesystem label=
OS type: Linux
Block size=4096 (log=2)
Fragment size=4096 (log=2)
41664 inodes, 166400 blocks
8320 blocks (5.00%) reserved for the super user
First data block=0
Maximum filesystem blocks=171966464
6 block groups
32768 blocks per group, 32768 fragments per group
6944 inodes per group
Superblock backups stored on blocks:
32768, 98304, 163840

Writing inode tables: done
Creating journal (4096 blocks): done
Writing superblocks and filesystem accounting information: done

This filesystem will be automatically checked every 21 mounts or
180 days, whichever comes first. Use tune2fs -c or -i to override.

8. # mkdir temp
# mount -o loop root.bin temp
# cd temp

9. # svn co --username guest --password guest https://svn.wdlxtv.com/svn/1.06.43-wd
lxtv/plus/trunk .
-sh: svn: not found

10. So I halted and unmounted temp

So... hopefully we are making progress. Please let me know what's next!

Cheers,

I could be totally mistaken

but I think what's needed on plus version is for somebody to install official firmware 1.06.43
then open up the device connect a serial cable directly to the board, then copy file from the official firmware

Yes, I'm with you, but the 1.06 stock FW doesn't have a root.bin file, and he mentioned I should grab the latest 0.5.2.1, so I'm missing a step somewhere.

Am definitely happy to keep poking at this, and now that I know people are updating the thread, I'll check back regularly...

BTW, if the stock 1.06 FW is needed, note that the Plus ver is different than the Live ver, so I'll need to know which one to be working with at any given time... Plus: Release 1.06.42 (1/17/2013)

Cheers,

Thanks for trying - you're almost there :)
You need to boot the flash firmware (1.05-0.5.2.1) and go into the webend -> addons manager and install "devtools.app.bin". This will provide the svn command. After this (you don't need to reboot), you can do the following steps:
Code: Select all
cd  /tmp/media/usb/USB1/2044CA7344CA4AEC
mount -o loop root.bin temp
cd temp
svn co --username guest --password guest https://svn.wdlxtv.com/svn/1.06.43-wdlxtv/plus/trunk .

svn will probably ask you to accept a self-signed certificate, and then proceed and download the files. Once it is done, you can run the following commands:
Code: Select all
sync
cd ..
umount temp
reboot

The box should boot from the root.bin and you should be running a slightly modified version of 1.06 (I added some OSD customizations yesterday). For now I just need confirmation that it boots and that you see the "blue wood floor" background. I'll be adding some more commits in the following days to add support for telnet so that you won't need a serial cable.

A sign that it doesn't boot is you getting in a boot loop (WD Logo + reboot).

To get back to your flashed firmware boot the unit with the USB drive unplugged. If you rename root.bin to something else, it will no longer try to boot it on startup (so that you can boot your device without unplugging the USB drive).

Good luck!

P.S. We should continue the discussion here: http://forum.wdlxtv.com/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=9073 - this thread is for 1.05-0.5.2.1 issues, not for 1.06 ;) development.

It's been a while since I've been around here, but I noticed some fixes that are included in this release talk about the WDTVExt plugin. Is that plugin now included/supported on the PLUS?

No, sorry. Wdtvext support was only added for 1.05 live and is unstable (will crash the box sooner or later). If it were more stable we would have tried to bring it to plus as well. You can run the live ext3 version on your plus to try it out.
By the way, firmware version 0.5.2.2 has been released and fixes some bugs found in 0.5.2.1
