So, for now, having WDTVEXT=OFF set explicitly in your config should result in a stable firmware boot.
No need to stress-test the boot procedure because I'm already doing it. What I need from my beta testers (and thank you greatly for your help by the way!), is to test the regular features they use. I plan on releasing a newer beta soon with a new rtorrent and some fixes so you might want to wait for that instead.

Regarding my stability tests, I did a new one over the night. I restored my regular config (the one I used when merging and testing features) and I set WDTVEXT=ON and I rebooted and checked the box in a loop. Out of 186 reboots I had 186 times the OSD started correctly and 0 failures. So what the fuck?!?! It works correctly each time with my config, and only starts 8-15% of the time on the default config.

Now I need to devise a plan to see how to isolate the difference in my config (compared to the default config). The problem is I have about 450 settings in my config (a lot of UMSP stuff, also some older settings), so it would take about two days of continuous test to try each setting. And it wouldn't be conclusive, as we've seen in previous tests (there's a chance the box starts with wrong config).

I'll need to put my best people on it pronto, but I could use a different config where WDTVEXT is somewhat stable (@DjArty can you PM me your config as well?) to see what we have in common and eliminate the differences...

Ok, I'm releasing a newer version of the beta, still called 0.5.2.1 (because I hate wasting release numbers and hate accepting bad releases :lol: ). The old links should be invalid.

If you want, please do your tests with these versions instead. Here is the changelog (the last 9 lines are new compared to the last beta):

Code: Select all
0.5.2.1 - 2015-01-15
  * Added WDTVExt support for 1.05-Live firmware. You should now be able to use your favourite WDTVExt plugins on 1.05 base firmware (live only). Work by pibos, but left in an unfinished and unstable state.
    - enable WDTVExt by setting WDTVEXT=ON and reboot
    - most WDTVExt plugins work (like ExtSheet, MediaMark, etc), with the exception of MediaNavigationV4, which is too slow to be useful at this time
    - because of the unfinished state of pibos' work you will probably get OSD crashes from time to time. If it's too unstable for you, disable WDTVEXT. It should be stable enough if you frequently reboot the box or if you use some form of DEEP_SLEEP. Your mileage might vary. I was able to get a video to play back and to listen to music for 2h before crashing. It usually crashes after a long period of inactivity, when pressing a key on the remote.
    - WDTVExt: Removed as much debugging as possible from libext.so without compromising stability (the little there is). Changes made total over 5KB of code changes (mad_ady):
      * Removed 247 calls to _mcount()
      * Removed 54 calls to trace_method_enter()
      * Removed 54 calls to trace_method_leave()
      * Short-circuited the body of trace_message()
      * Removed 84 calls to trace_method_proxy() (aka sub_26F4C)
      * Short-circuited the body of network_trace() (aka sub_27114)
      * Short-circuited the body of trace_worker()
      * Short-circuited the body of _trace_send()
      * Removed calls to clear_trace_entries()
      * Removed calls to Data in [%p, %p) function (around 0x027C90)
  * Updated php from 5.3.2 to 5.3.14 with builtin mysql and curl support. Added php binary plus the required libs. Removed older libs and config that are no longer needed. (all firmwares) (mad_ady)
  * Bug-Fix: Repaired missing pieces of the bi2 commit (1.02/1.05-live firmwares) (mad_ady)
  * Added Root CA certificates for curl (should fix invalid certificate warnings in curl and rtorrent) (mad_ady)
  * Added missing font mappings (correct path) for imagemagick (needed by webscreenshot.app.bin) (mad_ady)
  * Changed dmaosd's buffered output when going through tee to line buffered (instead of 16k buffers). (mad_ady)
  * Added an option to restart DMAOSD from the webend (in case it crashes or anything) (mad_ady)
  * Moved php and some of its dependencies to bi2 (mad_ady)
  * Mark all *.sh files in /conf as executable (permissions don't stick after a reboot) (mad_ady)
  * Fixed reboot from Reloader WDTVExt plugin not working (mad_ady)
  * Updated rtorrent (and rutorrent) from 0.8.6 to 0.9.2 (thanks to workingman). Also disable HTTPS certificate checks in the default config
      * Note: If you previously used rtorrent, you will need to comment out the following lines from /conf/rtorrent.conf, or delete it and it will be recreated with reasonable defaults:
        #safe_sync = yes
        #hash_read_ahead = 5
        #hash_interval = 10
        #hash_max_tries = 5
* Don't start WDTVExt if WDTVEXT=ON is not explicitly set (1.05 only) (mad_ady)

So, now it should start correctly even if you have reset your config (WDTVEXT is assumed OFF if it doesn't appear in the config), however WDTVEXT still doesn't work with the default config. I'm still looking into it...

Let me know if you encounter other problems - do your standard tests, plus:
* rtorrent/rutorrent
* boot with config reset

Feel free to remove any private information from your config :)
As for "no freeze", sorry, I'm not a magician. It will eventually crash, but my hope is you will have at least a couple of hours of usage before it crashes. Also, I added a "Restart OSD" option in the webend to restart just the OSD to sweeten the problem. :D

Update: I managed to "trim down" my config and remove lots of UMSP stuff that isn't relevant in this comparison. With this config WDTVEXT is able to start:

I believe the B is for Bungalow, which was the code name for Plus (compared to V from Villa for Live).

Anyway, I managed to "isolate" about 80 config items that if set (like this) will cause DMAOSD to crash:
Code: Select all

I'm thinking of a few tests to do and keep you posted. I'm open to suggestions as always!

It's weird - those settings above come from a larger config that works. If I split them in half and try both halves, it results in the firmware chrashing each time. If I leave them like above, but add the original settings I cut out - the firmware runs. So, at this point I don't know how to approach this problem or what to look for... Any ideas?

Just a crazy idea: what if you "unset" a config variable, would the next reboot not "re-initialize" that variable? Switching back to your original config (and thus rolling back to you crashing values)?

Sow, I finalized my tests of today (unfortunately before your last update). Hereby my findings:

- booted firmware with WDTVExt="ON"
- linux came up fine
- OSD came up fine (remarkable fact: my video_output was again reset to composite, however HDMI (luckily for me) gave image
- WDTVExt menu came up, pressed "create .wdtvext-plugin on USBx" 100 times, did not do what it supposed to do
- created manually the dir on USB1
- rebooted
- was able to "download" MediaMark (extsheet was already there for an unknown reason)
- browsed through video catalog, saw movie listing and then screen blacked out
- unit still reachable through ssh & webend, tried the OSD reboot function (why does the end user need to click so many times? The last message is confusing: did it stopped or restarted? Was not clear for me, but it worked :lol: )
- browsed again, saw an interesting (new?) feature under the options menu in Video (upload to facebook?!)
- but before being able to start a movie, it crashed again.
- hard booted the device, came up again like a charm.

So tell me, is this the way it should behave :mrgreen:

Well, yes :lol: It behaves as expected...

* Not sure why it didn't create the .wdtvext-plugin folder - never tested it, but I'll try to have a look.
* MediaMark and ExtSheet should work fine (ExtSheet is already part of the firmware)
* When the OSD crashes, it either displays a black screen or the last image. Remote doesn't work, but ssh/webend should still work.
* The OSD Reboot feature in the webend calls /etc/init.d/S70dmaosd stop (to cleanly stop the OSD if possible) and then calls /etc/init.d/S70dmaosd start > /dev/null. The redirect to /dev/null is needed, because when you start dmaosd you get a lot of debugging output that is undesirable. I will add a manual echo to tell you that the OSD is starting to alleviate confusion.
* Upload to Facebook must be an official feature, I don't even have a facebook account (proud to be anti-social!) :lol:

What I can reccomend if you want to use WDTVEXT in a quasi-reliable fashion is:
* submit relevant prayers to your $deity
* when navigating the OSD, do it gently - don't move too fast through the menu entries
* once you have a video playing enjoy and try to reboot the box once you reach the end

Sorry, WDTVEXT is unstable and I can't fix that (I tried, but it seems it didn't help much). When 1.06 is ready, I'll try to plea with pibos to return or at least to give us the code.

Thanks for testing :)
I'm glad I have your config - now that I know WDTVEXT works for you I can start to compare stuff.
