Possible to stream to ipad?

Postby deadhead85 » Sun Apr 29, 2012 4:10 pm

I was wondering if it is possible to setup the wdtv live plus so that I could hook up external drives then stream content from the drives to my iPad outside of my home network. I am able to stream content to my iPad while at home, but would like to do so while on the go. Any ideas?

Thanks a lot for any help.

I remember there has been a few posts on the forums explaining how to do this. So yes, it is doable, but I don't remember how people were doing it.

I looked around but couldn't find anything. I am able to connect to my external drive attached to the wdlive player from withing my network. I am looking to connect to the hard drive attached to the wdlive device and then stream .mkv files to my iPad while transcoding on the fly.

How can I get my public/external ip address of the wdtv live? I can get it easily within my network and I know my router's external ip. How about my wdlive? I guess that's a start. I have been trying for days to get this to work, and I don't even know if it's possible. I am kind of a noob.

Thanks!

1. The WDTV can't transcode .mkv on the fly. It's lacking the processing power to do this.
2. Streaming that works in your LAN (eg. DLNA, Mediaservers, ...) won't work on the internet for several reasons.

If you want to play media from your home on the go you need a different solution, eg. for music I'm using ampache a website that lists your songs and streams them using http. I'm not sure if it can do video as well but I'm sure there is something similar for video as well.

I can't track down the post from that person who had setup streaming to outside his LAN. You could install MiniDLNA, and setup a VPN between your house and your iPad. Manually entering the public IP address (and port) in your DLNA client (such as Plugplayer) might work.

Otherwise, Mediatomb provides a web interface, which you could forward on your router.

Thanks for all the help!!

I setup a VPN and was Unable to access it on my iPad. It would connect for a second, then disconnect and I got some error message about being disconnected from the host. S I tried on my android phone, and was able to connect with no problem. I was browsing and able to view the external drive attached to my wdtv device.

Any ideas why it won't work with an iPad? I setup a pptp VPN if at matters....that was the only option for VPN I saw.

The message is "you were disconnected by the communication device. Try reconnecting. "

Wow. I think I found the problem. I was able to connect using my android device on the lte network. However, when I tried while connected to wifi I was unable to connect. My iPad is wifi only and is using the same wifi as my phone. I have a portable wifi device so I can use wifi anywhere. I guess e problem must be going through the small pocket wifi thing. Any ideas how to fix it? I am sooooooo close!!

And I just got the user name and password to log into the mini router. In the settings I can change some stuff and enable port forwarding and dhcp, etc. anything in there? Maybe I need to forward VPN ports to my home router? Anything with looking at in there? Maybe there is some problem with this router connecting to my home router?

Where is your PPTPD VPN server? If it's on the router itself, then you don't have to forward any port at all. If it's on a computer, then you would have to forward TCP 1723 and ICMP 47 (most routers will forward ICMP if you set protocol type to "Both"). However since your Android device can connect just fine, I'd assume the issue is more with Apple's usual poor compatibility with anything not Apple. I had a customer with an older MacBook who failed to connect to their work's VPN, but worked fine once she got a newer MacBook.

If you are using an access point, see if that access point has any "PPTP passthru" setting in it - many wifi routers do.

Also, keep in mind that VPN'ing from inside your home network might not always work (if that's what you are testing). It's usually best to test it from outside the home network.

Thanks for the reply. I am really close to getting this to work. Not bad for an almost complete noob. But I guess almost doesn't count

My PPTP VPN server is on my router. My Android was able to connect fine using the LTE network, but when I tried with wifi it didn't work. My iPad is wifi only, so when I tried to connect, it didn't work. I have a small device called an "Egg". I live in South Korea, and it gives you personal wifi. So I can just throw it in my bag and then walk around and use my personal wifi.

I also tried using my work's wifi network, and I wasn't able to connect at all there. Using my personal wifi, I was able to connect for a couple seconds (about 10-20), then it would disconnect.

Last night I downloaded the GoodPlayer app and was able to connect from within my home network to the WD Live using the FTP server setup with WDLXTV. But when I did, I only saw some random files. I was unable to move up a level. Is there a way to add the external hard drive to the FTP server then just try to access it through ftp?

I was also able to connect to the SMB server from within my home network using the GoodPlayer app, and browse the attached external hard drive. I then clicked on the .mkv files and it played. 1080p had trouble, but I was able to play additional file types not supported by Apple.

If you FTP as root, your HDDs will be accessible under /tmp/media .

I logged into the FTP both at home and remotely but am unable to see that directory.

I see some files and folders....
