smb.conf examples?

Postby malber4 » Thu Sep 29, 2011 6:54 pm

Hi all,

I am trying to get Samba working on my newly networked wdtv gen1 but can't seem to get the smb.conf correct.

Can anyone who is using a windows machine and windows explorer to successfully see the media on their wdtv gen1 using samba, post their smb.conf file?

If I remember correctly, I didn't have to do much to my samba.config file. I think just specify my workgroup? I also posted my netmounts file. My NFS shares are commented out because I'm not streaming any high bit rate files right now. My Gen1 is rock solid and streams perfectly. And when using my NFS server I could stream up to about 10 Mbps files. I can navigate to my G1 through explorer and see and edit any files on the USB stick or an attached hard drive. I am using a 4 port USB hub that my ethernet adapter and USB stick for WDLXTV files attach to.

Code: Select all
[global]
   workgroup = SR1
   server string = WDTV Media Server
   printcap name = /etc/samba/lib/printcap
   load printers = no
   log file = /etc/samba/var/%m.log
   max log size = 1
   security = share
   smb passwd file = /etc/samba/lib/smbpasswd
   socket options = TCP_NODELAY SO_RCVBUF=8192 SO_SNDBUF=8192 SO_KEEPALIVE
   interfaces = lo eth0 wlan0 usb0 ra0 vlan0 rausb0 ath0
   dns proxy = no
   name resolve order = lmhosts bcast host
   null passwords = yes
   follow symlinks = yes
   unix extensions = no
   max connections = 25
   display charset = UTF8
   max smbd processes = 10
   printable = no
   hide files = /lost+found/System Volume Information/$RECYCLE.BIN/RECYCLER/
   kernel oplocks = no
   oplocks = yes
   level2 oplocks = yes

    hide dot files = no
    force create mode = 0644

Hey Captain 80's,

Thanks for the post reply!

I'm curious, are you able to navigate to your wdtv via windows explorer with those settings you posted? As in, are you able to use the wdtv as a samba server, and not just a samba client?

I thought I answered that.
I can right click "My Computer" and explore, and the G1 shows up as "usb on WDTV Media Server (Wdtv-9f4d3)". I can click on it and my network shares (listed in my netmounts file) show up that I am accessing off of my main office computer and I can view (and edit and play) all of those. The USB stick I have attached to the un-powered 4 port usb hub shows up and I can access and edit all of the wdlxtv files. Handy for changing the background, screensaver or modifying my net.mounts file from any where in the house. Of course it also shows up in "My Network Places" with the same access (only if I let it grab it's own address via DHCP... If I assign an ip to it, it will not show up in "My Network Places", but I can still get to it via explorer and ftp). I can play any file (music or video) that is attached to the G1 on any computer (well... within the bitrate limitation of samba). The only thing I can't do is access the G1 with my Live Plus (even if I have a drive attached to it with folders/files that are being shared). It shows up in Network Shares on the Plus but says the folder is empty, though I am currently running stock firmware on the Plus (I was having problems with "Display File Size" not working properly and making my unit unresponsive on WDLXTV for the plus... still playing around.)
Here is my net.config also:
Code: Select all
#
# Network configuration file

#You can override the hostname here:
HOST=WDTV

# if you do not set a hostname,a random one is assigned.

# attempt to set jumbo frames
MTU=9000

#
# Dynamic IP Configuration:
DHCP=yes

#
# Static IP Configuration:  (only if not DHCP)
#DHCP=no
#IP=10.10.10.102
#GW=10.10.10.10
#NM=255.255.255.0
#DNS1=66.93.87.2
#DNS2=216.231.41.2
#WORKGROUP=SR

#
# Optional:

#specify time server host
#NTP=pool.ntp.org

#specify timezone (example=pacific North America)
#TZ=pacific North America

#do not load any network drivers (saves memory)
#SUPPRESS_OTHERS=yes

Hey Captain 80s,

Thanks for the response. I want to figure out why I can't seem to use my wdlxtv as a samba server. My net.mounts is similiar to yours. What else are you using on the boot usb stick? What binaries and config files? Maybe I am using one that causes some kind of samba conflict...

I'll post the list of files that are on my USB stick later tonite if I have time. Are you wired ethernet and DHCP? Are your computer(s) and the G1 in the same workgroup?
