What can I do if I dont have an extra USB drive?

Did you try just unplugging the USB disk, waiting a few seconds, and plugging it right back in as Kad suggested? What you describe is a well known issue, documented in dozens of posts, on the FAQ and on the Wiki. 99.999% of the persons with that issue resolved it by following those simple steps.

don't turn it off when you unplug and replug the USB stick. make sure it is FAT32 not FAT. Both of these worked for me I kept trying to turn off the power.

If all fails Take 5 bucks go get another USB stick, trust me you'll use it again someday. Looks like if you want to mod this you may need to leave one pluged in the back too

sorry guy's for another noob problem here.
I have the wd live plus box. Out of box hooked to internet and updated to fw 1.06.16_B.
Then found your site. Read the crap out of it and even watched a ton of youtube vids about it.
came to your site went into the fw for LIVE PLUS started at the top and worked my way down.
copied all the right files changed them if needed (which they all did).
Yes i reformated them all to fat32 (Kingston 8gb PNY8gb PNY4gb and some noname one).
put files on them, all of them many times. Tried with wd box turned on pluged into side then unpluged power about 20sec
then back in, the update never comes up. Tried with power still on unplugging usb then sticking right back in and same ole nothing.
Same thing with the back usb port.
There must be something i ain't doin right here?
I just don't know what it is.
If you could KICK me in the right direction.
this sounds so simple.
Help a retard out if you can.
Thanks
B

What do you mean by that... you never see the "New Firmware available" on the WDTV ?

If thats the case 2 possibilities

1. you did not modifier the .ver file correctly

2. you have the wrong firmware on the usb stick.... like you have WDTV Live firmware, but your device is the WDTV Live Plus

VERSION='1.03.49_B.WDLXTV_PLUS-0.4.7.3'
LOCATION='wdtvlive2.bin'

probably you should change to

VERSION='1.20.04.WDLXTV_PLUS-0.4.7.3'
LOCATION='wdtvlive2.bin'

This is what i had and then changed it to exactly. per the bottom of the READ ME file (And a bunch of other numbers as well)
with the .ver .bin and .fff files. and i did save the .ver file after i changed it.
All put on three dif flash drives that work i put an avi movie on all three and put them into the wd tv live plus player and it played on all three.
after i reformated the flash drive to fat32 and put the three files onto it then safely unconnect the flash drive. i unplug the player and put in the memory stick on the left side, plug the wd live plus back into the back of it and then wait. the New Firmware folder never comes up. I have tried unplugging the flash drive for a few secs and then back in, nothing new happens. I've tried the same with the back usb port as well.
Is this all or am i missing something here? Has there ever been a wd box that this could'nt be done on before?
I followed everything to the T.

Thanks
B

you should change only the version number in the .ver file...

try
Code: Select all
VERSION='1.06.49_B.WDLXTV_PLUS-0.4.7.3'

note that the _B is still in the string!

Hi @all,

I have a brand new WD Live at FW: 1.06.15_V, so I try to install the latest Homebrew package "1.05.04_V_WDLXTV.COM_WDLXTV_LIVE-0.5.1.1.zip"
found here http://uploaded.to/folder/vcfj1j from an earlier post:
The Flash seems to be ok, but I've got some great Problems playing .mkv Files.
Black Screen and no response with the remote control! :oops:

Is this only a test version, maybe unstable?
Do you work on a new version based on official release 1.06.15_V?

So sorry for that noob questions and my bad english, i'm from germany ;)

@proximacentauri: Check that your mkv file has codecs supported by the wdtv. There is no general mkv playback problem with this release.
Also, there's no work being done on 1.06 because it introduces more bugs than it fixes. The dev team are waiting for a better release to convert.

Thanks for your fast support,
from my point of view it is not a .mkv problem, this video plays well on last official FW 1.06, but I must try with an other Hombrew-FW like
1.03.49_V_WDLXTV.COM_WDLXTV_LIVE-0.4.7.3.
This is the last release found here: http://forum.wdlxtv.com/viewforum.php?f=61 and that is the question come from.
The other question is to set the system settings to default, before or after fashing, or is this reasonable to do that?
THX a lot

In your case, you can try 1.05-0.5.1.1 since it might have improvements in your case. Search the forum for it. It's not quite a final release, but it's stable enough for general use.
You can reset to factory defaults before/after flashing, but it shouldn't matter that much. The settings are kept across upgrades and usually don't interfere with eachother. You can use the Web interface to make a backup of your config and to wipe it.
