And also, make sure it's not just a video issue (connect also the composite cable/hdmi). Maybe the video output goes to the different video port...

Yea that was the first thing I thought of that the HDMI had switched to Composite so I plugged a cable in ,, I get the logo come up in both HDMI and Composite, obviously composite is alot lower quality ...

Using EXT3-BOOT non-flash firmware the USB drive is read for alot longer ... my device boots in this order:

- BOOT (POWER UP)
- PAUSE (2 seconds)
- WDTV LOGO (2 second into this the USB loads)
- USB DRIVE BEING READ (15 seconds with EXT3 firmware, about 5 seconds when with non-ETX3 firmware)
- WDTV LOGO DISAPPEARS (BLANK SCREEN)
- PAUSE (2 seconds)
- USB DRIVE BEING READ AGAIN (15 seconds with EXT3 firmware, about 5 seconds when with non-ETX3 firmware)
- NOTHING ......

Have tried with 0.4.7.3 EXT3-BOOT firmware, no joy :(

...... SUCCESS

Tried your method again ... with 0.4.5.3 EXT-BOOT, put the USB in SLOT 1 (the one on the side of the WDTV),

Powered up, menu loaded ,,, I'm in !!

You genius's !!!!!!

My next step was gonna be the bin !

FIRMWARE RECOVERY SUCCESS ON G2

Postby dbizzzz » Fri Jun 24, 2011 12:53 pm

Thanks you so much KAD & MAD-ADY, you stuck with me and helped me so much through this problem, I thought I'd already tried everything, but your great help, comments and suggestions have made me a happy man again, not to mention a happy wife & child (who was missing her films for about 2 days ... in kids time that's almost a year to you and me) ...

I take it the WDTV is booting direct from the USB drive and to flash the WDTV box I will need to stick the G2 firmware on a USB pen and into the other USB slot.
I will not touch WDLXTV-G2-0.4.7.3 firmware, but will instead install and go back to the working WDLXTV-G2-0.4.5.3 firmware which I had before.

I'm so lucky to get this working, and again I must give praise to you guys and your efforts, many thanks ..

Put 0.4.5.3 firmware on another USB stick and plugged into the other USB slot, updated firmware as normal, let it all boot up again
Powered off, removed all USB's and now booting up on it's own, back into good ol' reliable working 0.4.5.3 ... everything back as it was.

I'm back with a working WDTV again, thanks again chaps ..

S00custom-option .. could this be the reason for 0.4.7.3 pro

Postby dbizzzz » Sun Jun 26, 2011 4:12 am

Upon reflection of others & my own problems with the firmware WDLXTV-G2-0.4.7.3 could the issue be just a setting from the S00custom-options ??

looking back to when I updated and my WDTV and it wouldn't load up, I still hadn't changed my S00custom file from 0.4.5.3

perhaps I had enabled an option whilst on 0.4.5.3 that 0.4.7.3 firmware just doesn't like ...

if anyone cares to test ... here's a copy of my S00custom-option file that works fine on 0.4.5.3:

Code: Select all
#!/bin/sh
##
## in this file you can enter commands that will be executed with the init.d scripts
## typos / syntax errors will prevent the osd from booting
## this file is only executed if it is at the root of an attached device at boot
##  *** NO REFLASH IS REQUIRED: S00custom-options is executed EVERY boot ***
##
## several examples are provided below, uncomment (delete #) them to use
##
##
## config_tool commands only need to be executed _once_ then they can be re-commented
## ***NOTE*** commenting a config_tool command does *NOT* disable it
##            you must change a setting back to default manually
##
##
##

## change background image between 3 stock options, or arbitrary location
## background image **CAN NOT** be larger than 512KB
##
## the following three images are included in the firmware
## original background:
config_tool -c BACKGROUND_IMAGE=original_bg.jpg
## eM82's backdrop background:
#config_tool -c BACKGROUND_IMAGE=eM82_bg.jpg
## wood panel (default) background:
#config_tool -c BACKGROUND_IMAGE=villa_bg.jpg
##
## To set an absolute location:
#config_tool -c BACKGROUND_IMAGE=/tmp/mnt/123ed956-1256-4825-9e79-86fc1e0febaa/random/location.jpg
##
## You can also supply an image, on an attached device at boot (like S00custom-options),
## which is 1280x720 and *NO* larger than 512KB named villa_bg.jpg and it will be used as the custom background
## *ONLY* villa_bg.jpg will work in this method, and *you may remove the device if you desire* after the background has been loaded
##

## change screen saver image between wdlxtv & original WD logo's, or arbitrary location
##
## wdlxtv logo
#config_tool -c SCREEN_SAVER_IMAGE=screen_saver.png
## original WD logo
config_tool -c SCREEN_SAVER_IMAGE=screen_saver.orig.png
## some random location (absolute)
#config_tool -c SCREEN_SAVER_IMAGE=/tmp/mnt/123ed956-1256-4825-9e79-86fc1e0febaa/some/random/screensaver-image.png
##
## You can also supply an image, on an attached device at boot (like S00custom-options),
## which is *NO* larger than 512KB named screen_saver.png and it will be used as the custom screen saver image
## *ONLY* screen_saver.png will work in this method, and *you may remove the device if you desire* after screen_saver.png has been loaded

apols, I never even knew you could 'codetag' ?! on here (hence noob status), thanks for changing that

flip93 -
the download was removed because some people are having problems with the update,
if you read through the rest of this thread you'll see what the issues are.

... fingers crossed B-RAD finds some spare time to look at it

Postby Taz » Sat Jul 16, 2011 6:56 am

hello everybody,

i have trouble to activate msheets with 0.4.7.3. i used the original S00custom-options and tried a shorter one.
short one:
Code: Select all
##The following option is necessary (read about it in the forums) . . . I had to type this in to the S00 file myself:
config_tool -c SHOW_FILESIZE_SETTING=0
##The following option allows me to have the thumbnail view, and then click the thumb for a full view of the movie sheet:
config_tool -c MSHEETMODE=std
##The following option allows movie sheets for videos:
config_tool -c VIDMSHEET=ON  (this allows movie sheets for videos)
config_tool -c GENMSHEET=ON
config_tool -c LISTMSHEET=ON
##The following option ensures that the hard drive turns off when the WDTV is turned off:
config_tool -c USB_POWER_OFF=1

nothing can activate my msheets. i have to say, this are my first steps with G2, cause till now i had a good working (slowly) WDLXTV Gen1.

what do i miss? i instert a blank USB drive with the "S00custom-options" file, plug it to USB 1 and plug in the power cord. the WDTV is booting and i can watch movies, but cant see one msheet. only the folder.jpgs and movie_XY.jpgs. but cant see the movie_XY.avi_sheet.jpg. i dont know why.
do i have to follow some rules in size or resolution of the jpgs?

pls help, i'm trying hard but cant get it to work. and i dont have any USB WIFI Dongles :/ so i can't connect via telnet
