How to mantain & test translation updated easily

Edit / Check translation
Many times it's a big job check if our translation it's updated comparing number of strings and strings order.
I found a system that can we help to maintain the translation updated easily.
Using POEedit and master english language (empty) as template is possible to add automatically the new strings and remove the orphans (old) strings.

- use Notepad++ or POEdit or any other application compatible wityh UTF-8 text coding.
- Download the empty file (attached also to this post). Copy the empy.po file as empy.pot (template)
- Run the editor and open your translation
- Fill in the mpety string (using text editor the string are msgstr "" - please don't touch msgid string)

How to test translation
Copy your language as custom-language-01.po in the root of USB key with other file of WDLXTV firmware.
Unplug the WDTVLive power supply connector.
Connect the USB key with firmware file and your translation to one USB port of WDTVLive.
Connect the WDTVLive power supply connector to WDTVLive.
Go to Main menu - Setup - and select first japanese language.
Now you can see your custom language.
If you need some changes edit your custom-language-01.po file and reapply the procedure.

Before to switch off the WD and unplug the usb key (if you think to boot the WD without the USB key with custom-language-01.po) please goback to english language otherwise at next boot WD start with japanese language.

In b-rad firmware is possible tos elect any additional language if the firmwar recognize it and if the language is included in the firmware or available in USB stick.

Hi, I am the translator for the Portuguese (Brazil) language. The following strings are present in my po file and missing in your template:

You can associate your translation file to any custom menu language, replacing the original with the custom. For example, to replace the original Italian translation, add the following line to your S00custom-options file:

mount -o bind /tmp/custom-language-01.mo /osd/mo/it.mo

Access the language settings and select Italiano.

This eliminates the inconvenience of having to choose an Asian language, since you can select the correct language in the menu.

Thanks for the reply.

I identified the way to unpack teh WDTVLive WD & b-rad firmware.
Now I'm able to check the po files in /osd/mo folder.

Another tricks.

You can get en.po file from /osd/mo fodler, rename it as en.pot an use as template (is not necessary to remove msgstr strings)

I will prepare all resource (like current languages and templates) for

- WDTVLive standard firmware (1.02.21 and beta 1.03.43)
- WDTVLive b-rad firnware
- PsycoTHC firmware

In this way we can upgrade all firmware (standard and mod) with right trasnaltions.

All text in the firmware is in on en.po file?

Another question, when selected "List mode" in the "Browser display", It shows in the brower the number of itens in the list, and the index of the selected item ("1 of 8"). I have not found a way to translate the word "of", as shown in "1 of 5". Simply adding msgid "of" to the po file does not work. I tried also with space: "of", "of" or "of" without success. How other translators have solved this problem?

I didn't find it in english and master languages of b-rad firmware.

In everyday use of the wdtv, I found some words not translated, then added them to the po file. It worked.
If you want I can try to search the places where I found them.
I also found other words that I could not fix. I added them to the .po file and nothing happened. The word "of", for example.

Many thanks for your important infos.
I used the same system to identify many not translated words in my language.
It's important that anyone found not translated words in WDTVLive menu and not present in the language report this info.

In this way we can populate the template file and the translator can update their tranlation.

Should be important also that developer report if and which strings are addede vs original WD firmware; in this way we can leave them ath the end of language file for a better maintenance.

To have the string tranalted tha are two things that have match:

- In the source code should be an external refernce to the string (with $$)
- the string (exactly with uppercase/lowercase and spaces) should be present in external language file.

Probably your problem about "of" is relative at first point.
If you are talking about "b-rad" fw please send a PVT to b-rad with all details to identify the place where "of" is present.
I did the same for other strinngs not translated and not present in language file about "WDLXTV" plug-ins.

Regarding you strings, monday morning I will update the template, and language file.
Thenm I will publish in this post the template for

- WDTVLive WD firmware 1.02.21
- WDTVLive WD firmware 1.03.43
- WDTVLive b-rad firmware 1.02.21
- WDTVLive OsychoTHC firmware 1.02.21

Also if you like that you include your language in some of this build please provide them me and I rebuild teh firmware with your updates.

Hi, these strings are displayed in the WDTVExt Plugins option, I added them to my po file:

Please add them to the template file.
There are other strings in the plugins menu that could not be translated. Simply adding them to the file did not work.

Please post here the list of strings that also added to language file remain in english.

Should be a start point for b-rad.cc to revised the firmware.
When teh language are rady b-rad.cc could release new b-rad fw based on WD 1.03.49.
