Does WDLXTV avoid freezing caused by latest WD firmware?

Postby wsherman » Sun Nov 01, 2015 8:53 am

Recently WDTV Gen3 devices have been freezing up all over the world. The community is trying to find the cause and work arounds. Some report that rolling back to firmware 2.01.86 fixed the lock-ups.

See these posts in WD Community forum:

Is this happening to anyone running a 2.02.32 based WDLXTV version?

My WDTV Gen3 freezes too. This is why I started to set up the homebrew firmware. Now the media player freezes anyway, maybe for another reason... I am just working on my new problems...

Its freezing on official f/w 2.02.32 or in combination 2.02.32 + WDLXTV only?
And not freezing on official 2.01.86 and 2.01.86 + WDLXTV?

If official 2.02.32 = freeze and 2.02.32 + WDLXTV = freeze - this looks like official f/w problem because its base.
(And need ask official WD to fix this + fix youtube at the same time)

In my case the media player freezes more often than before the update. Before the player hung up/freezes when I have renamed/deleted to much files of the usb hard disk. After flashing WDLXTV the player freezes/hangs up allways (I think near 100%) when I am working with my PC via network on the media player hard disk.
Very frustating is that in these cases when I pull the power plug the next time starting the media player the hard disk will be mounted as read only. Than I always have to eject the drive via remote control unplug the usb and reconnct it to get back the read/write permission for media player and PC.

Hi!

Yesterday I tested a few things on my WDTV 2.02.32-WDLXTV_Gen3-0.1.6
1. reset to factory defaults - do not help, freeze
2. disable WiFi autodiscovery - do not help, freeze
3. power off, removing USB key and reboot to original 2.0.2.32 FW, factory reset - do not help, freeze
4. after 3. insert USB key, install 2.02.32-WDLXTV_Gen3-0.1.6, reboot to homebrew - do not help, freeze

After point 4. I left WDTV idle and connected from PC (web page & telnet at the same time).
I issued CPU usage in browser to narrow the issue. Load reported was very low (< 1%).
Was played with commands (mostly ls and find). As time passed, the box (WDTV) responses slow down (very large time to respond to simple "ls -la /tmp").
At some point in time the delay was endles. The same was with web page response.
Have not noticed any issue in CPU usage - was low all the time. (Have'nt noticed, if it is autorefresh or "state at button pressed".)

As it looks, we are forced to downgrade FW on WDTV, as this freeze is exclusive to original 2.02.32 FW (latest, and hopefully not last one).

Any other idea?

Confirmed: Western Digital original 2.0.2.32 FW is the source of all headache!
I downgraded to previous FW (2.01.86) and all problems vanished. No more freezing, responsive...
All works as expected.

So with all the saddnes I have to say goodbye WDLXTV :( - no customisation exist for FW prior 2.0.2.32 on gen3 version of WDTV live.

Confirmed that also - 2.02.32-WDLXTV_Gen3-0.1.6 works with FW 2.01.86 base too.
The name prefix suggested me it works with 2.02.32 FW only, and have'nt tried it.

Thank you DJArty

FYI, the lockup problem apparently has been fixed by WD:
