How can I stream media to another room?

Postby ZQ8 Blazer » Mon Jan 20, 2014 5:27 am

Below is my current setup. I'd like to remove the iPod and instead of controlling the media with it I can use something with a remote control, but still keep it wireless(since the iPod, surround sound, and projector are in a different room.). What options do I have?

What exactly are you looking for?
Streaming from HD to projector?
Stream from ipod to TV?
What about a 2nd WDTV?

Currently I can view files from my external hard drive on my iPod using the wdtv which is connected to my wifi router. I would like to be able to do the same thing without using the iPod. I would like to be able to view all my files on the projector and also be able to use a remote control. If another WDTV can pick up the wifi signal of the 1st and display files from my external hard drive in the living room then that would be great.

Maybe this will help a little more.

Yes this should be possible.
1. On your current WDTV install a DLNA Media Server (eg. MiniDLNA)
2. Get a WDTV (Live/Plus) + supported WiFi dongle OR WDTV Live Streaming (Gen3) with built-in WiFi
3. Browse your media server on your old WDTV through the new WDTV (connected to projector) and play files.

Before you start spending money, please be aware that WiFi is the bottleneck here and may cause problems when streaming high bitrate files! ...but I guess since you used WiFi with the iPod as well you are aware of this problem.

Thanks! Yes I'm aware about the limitations, but I've never had a problem with loading it onto the iPod

Is this the one I need?

Yes, that's a Gen3 with built-in WiFi but there's no WDLXTV firmware for tihs device except a very early alpha release with lot's of not working parts.
But for your scenario the official firmware should be fine.

Since this one isn't hacked do I still need to make folders and sheets?

I have an older version of the WDTVLive-Plus with the WDLXTV-Plus firmware installed on it.

This firmware allows the unit to understand movie sheets and folders.

I don't believe a virgin, unmodified unit can work with movie sheets.
