I'm still within the return policy on mine, so if you walk me through it I'll get what you need. :)

I just bought two of the Lives for my network, and although I love them for what they CAN do, the glaring lack of the simplest refinements in the OFW disgust me.. Such as hiding photo and music files in the video menu/photo and video files in the music menu, etc, ability to hide unused servers/computers - I have six Directv2PC servers and four extra computers showing up, and they are nothing but clutter. The lack of graphical navigation when using an SMB share is also pretty stupid - nobody who is serious about a media network is going to use an external hard drive.

So I want to use this fw, but I also want to use it for Netflix.. So what can I do to help?

I'm comfortable doing things like this (very few of my devices still have their original firmwares.. :)) but I am definitely not fluent in Linux, so you have to go step by step.

Appreciate the courage, but I need somebody with Live Plus, not just Live...

My bad, they are the Live Plus model. WDBABX0000NBK-00. Sorry, now I realize that it makes a big difference when talking about these things.. :D

Ok, don't let my "developer" badge fool you - what I'm about to say may be very dangerous and may permanently brick your WD.

What I need somebody to do is the following:
Get the .bin and .ver files from 1.05-0.5.1.1 release, and get the fff file from WD's GPL archive (posted a few threads back) Bungalow_launcher_firmware_3/wdtvlive2.fff and place all 3 files in the root of a USB drive.
Do a regular flashing by following the steps in the wiki (Quickstart).

After you're done flashing (assuming it worked and it rebooted to a working WDTV), I need you to login via telnet and issue these commands (and paste back here the output):
Code: Select all
uname -a
zcat /proc/config.gz | grep CONFIG_EFI_PARTITION

With this output we can re-start e-mailing WD to complain. Maybe they will get the picture.

Now, please note that flashing that kernel should be safe, after all, b-rad booted with it and tried a few things. But from what I've read it could disable your Netflix playback, so after you get that data, you should probably re-flash with the fff file that comes with wdlxtv firmware.

Good luck in your adventure! And PS. If you haven't flashed wdlxtv yet or have not played with telnet, you should experiment first with a known firmware before testing what I said...

Ok just to be clear, I'm using the .bin and .ver files from the 1.05-0.5.1.1 WDLXTV PLUS (the 114MB one), and the .fff file from the 1.06.16_B_G(0802) GPL package that is on the WD site (502MB), correct?

Yes, that's the plan... But wait for a while to see if the other devs have objections about this...
It should be safe, but hey, I haven't tried it... :P

Well, I felt a bit saucy, figured where's the fun in being safe.. :D

So the flash went off without a hitch, using the specified files.. I set the SSH password, then issued the commands exactly as you said, and this is what I got.

Image

Is the 'not found' to be expected or did I miss something? I ONLY used those three files in the flash - was I supposed to add the rest of what is in the 1.05-0.5.5.1 zip into the flash drive?

It's /proc/config.gz .

Actually just in case, also do "zcat /proc/config.gz > /tmp/kernel.config", then copy that /tmp/kernel.config file to a USB disk in case someone might want to look more closely at the other kernel options. It will be a plain text file.

Ahh, my bad.. Told you I'm a total weenie when it comes to Linux!

Code: Select all
zcat /proc/config.gz | grep CONFIG_EFI_PARTITION
CONFIG_EFI_PARTITION=y

I also did the kernel.config file, but I assume you don't want it thrown into a post because it's 32k. Looks like attachments are also disabled here.. Suggestion?
