Hulu Free content plugin

Hi all,
I posted this somewhere else in the forum and got a reponse, but they were not in the US and could not access the content. Hulu without a subscription has a ton of free movies and tv content. You cannot access this with the built in Hulu with the stock firmware. I was hoping a US dev would take a look at this and see if a plugin can be created to play all this content. Most of the popular shows have 3-4 free current ones, and then as they get older you need a subscription.

Here are some links if someone cares to take a look.

Hi,

Example categories
http://www.hulu.com/tv?src=topnav
http://www.hulu.com/movies?src=topnav
http://www.hulu.com/browse/tv?src=topnav
http://www.hulu.com/browse/network?src=topnav
http://www.hulu.com/genres/tv?src=topnav
http://www.hulu.com/browse/popular/tv?src=topnav
http://www.hulu.com/popular/episodes?src=topnav

This is a partial list of links most being for the TV content. The movie list also breaks down to popular, recent, trailers, documentaries and other way.
The menu system breaks it down quite a few ways, by most popular and newests and such.

Example shows
http://www.hulu.com/the-simpsons
http://www.hulu.com/greys-anatomy

I usually only watch this stuff on my computer but it would be much nicer to have a plugin for the WDTV live.

Thanks!

I could have swore you were told here where to actually post it.

well since this IS the UMSP section, and the only other place for UMSP is the Plugins section, where it clearly states in bold "No requests", I am even confused on where you think this request should have been posted.
just look at the topics here, many requests indeed. I think you may need another coffee :|

Yeah sorry,
The original post I put in noob central because I was asking if there was one I was missing already out there. I could not figure out the correct place to post it even with the thread telling me one place that does not allow it. I just thought it was a good idea since there is so much content there thats free. In the meantime I made a media server out of a old computer and just webbrowse to hulu and tell it to keep playing stuff, its like having tv. But I hate having this nice wdtv live and it has a hulu built into the firmware but only allows pay content. I am sorry, I just got carried away by the dev response that you could request in umsp plugins.

if done this would fall to the experemental category, as transcoding the content would have to be done
which is not possible on the underpowered WD

however, I do have a simple alternative for those willing to run something on another machine

RMerlin, has talked about serviio a lot

well I finally decided to give it a go, installed it on my server and works really well

I'm getting hulu free content on my WD, server transcodes on the fly, nice and easy

steps for most users will be a little different that mine, since I'm running it headless on ubuntu server 11:10

there's also some info in an earlier post here by BonzenPaule
http://forum.wdlxtv.com/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=6652

basically install serviio
http://www.serviio.org/download

it's free, there's windows, osx, & linux versions

once install you need to edit the profiles.xml
they have a default profile for WDTV, but it doesn't actually do anything
here's what I'm using for the wdtv profile

Code: Select all
<Profile id="14" name="WDTV Live" extendsProfileId="1">
      <Detection>
         <UPnPSearch>
            <ModelName>WD TV HD Live</ModelName>
         </UPnPSearch>
      </Detection>
      <ContentDirectoryMessageBuilder>org.serviio.upnp.service.contentdirectory.PacketVideoDLNAMessageBuilder</ContentDirectoryMessageBuilder>
      <SubtitlesMimeType>text/srt</SubtitlesMimeType>
      <Transcoding>
         <Video targetContainer="mpegts">
            <Matches container="wtv" />
         </Video>
         </Transcoding>
      <OnlineTranscoding>
         <Video targetContainer="mpeg" targetVCodec="mpeg2video" targetACodec="ac3">
            <Matches container="mp4" />
            <Matches container="flv" />
            <Matches container="asf" /> <!-- for mms:// -->
         </Video>
      </OnlineTranscoding>
   </Profile>

after editing profiles.xml

to to serviio forum and download the live feeds plugin pack
http://forum.serviio.org/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=3820

open the serviio console
go to library
go to onlilne sources

Select Add
here's a test to try for Castle
Select type as RSS/Atom Feed
http://www.hulu.com/feed/show/2309/episodes
Display Name type = Castle

click add
at the bottom corner click save

also make sure transcoding is enabled

find serviio under media servers on your WDLXTV
select video, online, castle

enjoy

Looks pretty good but every show I have clicked on says 'unsupported file type. consult the manual.'

I added feeds for crackle, cbs and hulu. I can see the list of content for each feed but nothing will play. I copied your profiles chunk for hulu and pasted it into mine and restarted serviio without any luck. Transcoding is checked in the console too.

Any ideas what to look for?

sounds like it's not actually transcoding, a lot of online content is flv which wd can't handle, if you don't have transcoding set up correctly it will not work

what system is serviio running on, in linux I had to recompile ffmpeg with librtmp, etc ...
they have a really good wiki, it was copy paste the whole way http://wiki.serviio.org/doku.php?id=build_ffmpeg_linux

on windows, or osx not sure what else would be needed

user error!
serviio is running on linux. I figured out my problem - I edited the profile but never selected it in the console so it was trying to use the generic dlna profile. I am getting video now but the audio was all static so I set it to keep original and I'll test it and report back.

thanks
