Clarification on UMSP plugins

Postby badfun » Wed Jan 04, 2012 7:57 am

Hi guys,
I bought the WD TV Live after reading about 'Flingo' and thinking that this would allow watching network shows online. I was disappointed to find out that is not the case. Then I thought I was saved when I started reading about UMSP plugins on this forum, only to be further disappointed that mine is one of the new encrypted units (WDBHG70000NBK-01).

So my question is: would I be able to access online tv shows such as http://shows.ctv.ca/video.aspx and http://ww3.tvo.org/video/#/all-programs/120183 if I created a UMSP plugin for them?

Before I go searching for an older unit I just wanted to be sure I could do that.

Thanks!
Ken

I'm no plugin's expert, and at work with no tools to really look into it but here's what I initially see

no api, so scraping will be needed, although I see rss feeds maybe those can be used
also video's are being played with flash, so there's a good chance you might need to transcode

the WD is too anemic to transcode in real time, an external proxy would be needed
but if it's only a container change, WD could probably handle that

moving to umsp forum, maybe somebody who knows better can take a look at codecs and stream protocol

thanks KAD,
yeah I've been researching the RSS option, but so far I can't even add a subscription of ANY kind, and the knowledge base and forum aren't helping.

Theoretically I think some video could be played through RSS, but according to this answer some types won't work: http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/8540/related/1/session/L2F2LzEvdGltZS8xMzI1NzI3MzU3L3NpZC9Oa0VzX2tOaw%3D%3D

WD official info will not help you do anything with this

what you need to find out is what transfer/stream protocol is used
example WD can't handle rtmp streams except that here with WDLXTV we've added support

once you get the stream you need to know what codecs you're dealing with
if the codecs are supported then it's not to hard to make a plugin, LOL look who's talking, I don't think I could create a plugin
if the codecs or container are not supported then you must transcode as well

I'd recommend looking at some of the other plugins
and reading the wiki UMSP pages should give you a good idea of what can be done

The best way to make sure you can/should do a plugin is first to save a couple of those clips locally and try to play them (on the Live/Live Plus or on the Streaming - I guess they support the exact same codecs). If it plays, then you can invest the time to build the plugin. If they don't play and you still want to do it, then you'd need a proxy for transcoding as KAD said.

Here are some links to get you started:

thanks guys for the responses.

I've been playing around more with the rss feature and it seems really buggy. I wasn't able to add any kind of feed at all first. Then I left it for a day and suddenly was able to add the same addresses I had been trying the day before. Only problem was, WD TV showed one RSS feed 3 times, instead of three seperate feeds. I deleted and tried to re-add, only to be told the feed was already in the list! weird.

I'll let you know if I can get anything else figured out.
