You should really take a look at http://flexget.com.
It works in conjunction with a "watch folder".
Since it runs on Python, should run on the WDTV.
(I have Python installed via Optbin in order to use GoogleCL)

I tried to install FlexGet but failed due to a known error when using opt.bin (can't handle reloc type0x2f).

I went through the installation of PIP and one dependancy safely, but then the FlexGet install failed...

Well there's another way you can try: compile python (and all it's dependencies) for WDTV as an app.bin.
It will be a pain (you have been warned) but it's absolutely possible. In fact the reason to kick python from the firmware were not just that we needed the space but also that python is a beast to compile with all it's dependencies.
