hello experts,

is there a way to change not just the welcome screen but also the initial WD logo while booting?

hi KAD,
thank's for your reply.
i was just wondering if your answer was meant ironic or seriously.
has anybody already done a own boot loader for wdtv live? or even gen3?
my programming skills are stuck at 486 assembler knowledge - stone age.
what would be the steps for a own boot loader?

Hmm, I wonder if that logo is generated by the bootloader... I know the bootloader is some form of uboot (if memory isn't failing me), but I don't think the bootloader has enough knowledge of the hardware to display an image.

My guess is that the logo is displayed by the kernel instead. It would mean that in theory you could change it just by recompiling the kernel... The impossible part is that the kernel sources are not available (not completely at least), and even if you compiled a different kernel it wouldn't boot because the kernel needs to be signed with WD's secret keys (the bootloader is set to only boot signed kernels).

So yes, KAD's answer was ironic/bitter-sweet because the platform is really locked down at the bootloader/kernel level. Otherwise we would have seen a lot more customization.

thanx.
you are just confirming what i thought/feared, mad_ady.

does anybody know a complete open hardware/software solution.
i just need a looped playback from flash drive without any logos and stuff while booting.
auto playback when plugged to power. hdmi.
so simpel.

You should probably look into a Raspberry PI. It's the closest thing to open hardware + software.
