Have a question about devices internals, memory layout, reverse engineering, etc---This is the place for anything so technical that it would cause a n00b's head to 'splode

I am trying to achieve the serial connection in this thread and the wiki. I have connected the Tx Rx and gnd as shown in the little diagram, and I do get an output when I power up the media player. However, I am unable to send commands (typing in any terminal is not possible). I tried doing a loop-test, simply connecting the Rx and Tx, and this seems to work fine, as now I can type and outputs are returned. Any clues on why I cannot send commands when connecting to the wdtv? Do I need the 5V pin also?

You won't see anything on WDTV when you press keys as long it's not booted into linux kernel and spawned the serial shell.
Since your box doesn't seem to boot that far, I'd say what you see is normal.

You should be able to get into YAMON though by pressing 0 during bootup.

WOW, I wish someone told me sooner. Thanks a unch, now I know my connection is ok. Gotta find some linux gurues who can help me ;) "Where's b-rad when needed  )

SOLVED!

Seems pressing "1" on boot will load everything up, then just upgraded firmware from usb pen.
