Well don't I feel silly as it turns out you can tell it not to build playlists with the -L option.

minidlna -d -f /conf/minidlna.conf -R -L

If you have a large audio collection this should save you hours of db build time

This is a bit more simple than patching and recompiling the source I admit.
Haven't looked at the manual, I dove right into the source when I read your post
