Yeah, I don't know how much that tutorial on the wiki will help you. I wrote it but I never tried anything other than StrongVPN. Should work just fine, but obviously something is wrong.

If you can get an IP you should troubleshoot with your VPN provider.

Also, like I said earlier, I don't know if there is something different about the pptp.app.bin that b-rad has on his site. My suggestion would be to try a different pptp client. If you install optware (http://b-rad.cc/binaries/opt.bin.tgz) you can install PopTop (http://poptop.sourceforge.net/).

To install it just run the following:
Code: Select all
ipkg install poptop

That will install all the dependencies and everything. Then just follow the documentation on the poptop site.

Other than that I'm not sure what else to tell you. Everything on the wiki is exactly what I did to get PPTP, OpenVPN, and a DNS Proxy working. If you figure out where your problem is or you end up using poptop, please update the wiki.

I resolved my issue, now its everything working since 30 minutes non-stop, watching video content blocked in my country, I did two things to resolve my trouble:

Assigned these two DNS IPs to my DCPH server running on my router:

4.2.2.2
8.8.8.8

And then I started my pptp vpn by executing it from the shell:

pppd call strong-vpn

because I could not start it via webend interface.

Regards,

VPN

PS. But still I would like to know how to resolve my openvpn issue (looking in the noob section), because I want to use pptp vpn only as a temporare solution.

Ok, UPDATE.

Since it was running for 4 hours, finally it crashed anyway. I have the feeling something is wrong with the pptp version, so I will try out your last advice.

I gonna keep you updated on my newest trial...

VPN.

I installed the poptop client, so far it is working pretty similiar straightforward than the pppd in the beginning & also appears robust, but we will see how long it gonna stays like this!

What do you mean when you say it crashed? Do you mean the Youtube app crashed or the WDTV crashed?

Use top or htop to monitor your WDTV from SSH and wait for a crash. Check to see how much RAM is being used. I can't imagine that pptp is using any substantial RAM, but maybe something is.

Where do you live and what content is blocked? I live in Kuwait so there is all kinds of stupid crap that is blocked. I found that the DNS proxy was the best way to get the content I wanted.

Ok, proxy is an alternative, but I figured out openvpn as the optimum and then backtracked as I realized it causes even more trouble than my initial pptp trials to keep it going with my wdtvlive.

Ok, wit crashing I mean that the GUI is freezing or even more, you cannot control it with the supplied remote control and youre also not able to regain control by using eiri. But obviously the machine is still working as I can reach it by telnet and ssh, but whatever known process that appears to me to be the reason for crushing is killed, I cannot set it back anymore in the original state unless rebooting it.

VPN.

Hi Spazlon,

after that problems I flashed today the lastest firmware, mounted opt.bin and installed poptop, then I created the char-secrets and options.pptpd file in /opt/etc/ppp/ and also a dialup file in /opt/etc/ppp/ but I can not start the client, since there is no pptpd.conf file in /etc/. it seems as poptop has been not properly installed or is lacking files?

As you adviced this to me, might it be possible to help me out?

Regards,

VPN

P.S. I also found out that poptop is only for server-use so that I additionally installed ppp, but then I get message that it is not supported in the kernel since it is lacking the correspondning module:

# pppd
pppd: pppd is unable to open the /dev/ppp device.
You need to create the /dev/ppp device node by
executing the following command as root:
mknod /dev/ppp c 108 0

# mknod /dev/ppp c 108 0
# pppd
pppd: This system lacks kernel support for PPP. This could be because
the PPP kernel module could not be loaded, or because PPP was not
included in the kernel configuration. If PPP was included as a
module, try `/sbin/modprobe -v ppp'. If that fails, check that
ppp.o exists in /lib/modules/`uname -r`/net.
See README.linux file in the ppp distribution for more details.

# pwd

# ls
apps conf_src lib osd sys
bi2 dev md5sum.txt proc sysconfig
bin etc mnt root tmp
boot home msheets sbin usr
conf init opt swf var
# /sbin/modprobe -v ppp
modprobe: module 'ppp' not found

A couple things. If your kernel doesn't support ppp you might want to check out the one b-rad uses (http://b-rad.cc/binaries/wdtvlive2.fff). Only use it if you have a Live Plus, i think it could brick a Live. I use that one for the SWAP support and I don't remember if I had that installed when I was doing all of the VPN stuff.

As for the missing config files, here are some example conf files: http://poptop.sourceforge.net/dox/

The config files go in /opt/etc.

Never flash a random .fff unless told so specifically by a developer. There are reasons why these kernels aren't included by default in the firmware generally. They usually have other issues or limitations.

You shouldn't need any special kernel. As long you always flash with the .fff provided with the downloaded firmware, you will have what's needed.

Yeah. Listen to everybody else. I am way past what I feel comfortable saying I can help you with. The firmware worked for me, but I don't know what the specific differences between them are.

If you need any more help you really should join the chat room and ask in person. They can help you way more than I can.

Good luck.
