iftop.app.bin - Network traffic monitor

Postby Jacket » Mon Jul 26, 2010 1:21 am

This is my first attempt, so let me know if something is wrong...
I noticed that wdtv lacks any network monitoring tool, so i decided to add one myself :)

Displays bandwidth usage information on an network interface

iftop does for network usage what top(1) does for CPU usage.
It listens to network traffic on a named interface and displays a table of current bandwidth usage by pairs of hosts.
Handy for answering the question "Why is my Internet link so slow?".

app.bin version 0.1

Download from here

Install notes:
Copy the archive to your usb drive, gunzip it, and reboot your wdtv:
Code: Select all
cd /tmp/media/usb/USB1/<tab>/
wget http://bit.ly/wdlxtv_iftop -O iftop.app.bin.gz
gunzip iftop.app.bin.gz
sync && sync && sync && sync
reboot

I noticed that my N apapter seems to default to G speed. Is there a way to change the adaper type to force an N connection?

LAN_TYPE='d'
LAN_TYPE_WIRELESS='d'

IP2='192.168.0.102'
NETMASK2='255.255.255.0'
GATEWAY='0'
GATEWAY2='192.168.0.1'
SET_DNS_SRV='a'
LANDNS='192.168.0.1'
IP_WIRELESS='192.168.0.88'
NETMASK_WIRELESS='255.255.255.0'
GATEWAY_WIRELESS='192.168.0.1'
WIRELESS_MODE='i'
WIRELESS_SSID='WZR-AG300H_2.4G'
WIRELESS_ENCRYPT_TYPE='5'
WIRELESS_KEY=''
WIRELESS_FAVORITE_PROFILE_ID='2'
WIRELESS_SSID_0='Zcastle-Repeater'
WIRELESS_ENCRYPT_TYPE_0='0'

Also and Am I supposed to telnet the following with the # signs included?

# cd /tmp/media/usb/USB1/<tab>/
# wget http://bit.ly/wdlxtv_iftop -O iftop.app.bin.gz
# gunzip iftop.app.bin.gz
# sync && sync && sync && sync
# reboot

If so ... then How do I access the data? DAHHHHH :ugeek:

Zorro, the # is the prompt in telnet. So no, don't enter as it is there already.

Now that I have done this, my question is
How do I use this? It seems to be on Putty but how do I get this info to display?

Ok I tried running the command but I get this error
Code: Select all
# iftop
interface: eth0
Unable to get IP address for interface: eth0
ioctl(SIOCGIFADDR): Cannot assign requested address
MAC address is: 00:90:a9:73:05:72
pcap_open_live(eth0): bind: Network is down

I have the iftop.app.bin located at the root of my local USB HDD which is NTFS. Could it be that? Should it be a thumb drive formatted in FAT32?
