I know these boxes are old ... but is there ANY plan to update to be able to play x.265 files?

Sorry, x265 will not be supported. The video decoder is part of the hardware, and even though that hardware is implemented on a FPGA (which is programmable), WD is not going to do it for a retired hardware line...
You need to upgrade your media player...
