WDTV Live Plus Nic speed at 10MB

Postby thesavo » Thu Mar 20, 2014 3:11 pm

I have a WDBABX0000NBK WDTV Live plus running Firmware 1.05.04_B 0.5.1.1
My on-board nic speed seems to be nerf'ed at 10MBps. Has anyone else seen this issue? Any Ethernet switch I plug it into, it's the only device operating at 10MB verses all the reset running at 100mbps or Gigabit. I have a done a speed test by running wget of a large file on the LAN and piping it to /dev/null. It doesn't peak over *updated * 3MB/s.

When search for "Linux Link speed" is seem to get an overwhelming number of results to use "ethtool". I also get some over complicated script using tools or tools using switches, not complicated for the MIPS processor in this thing. I have searched the web for "ethtool WDLXtv". The responses seem to avoid the question of using ethtool and WDLXtv. I have also searched this site and received no results.

I found a thread on compiling for WDLXtv on WDLXtv -Link- But the Download is over 800 MB.

I have coding PC Virtual Machine. I found something called ScratchBox2for cross-compiling on a PC. It's getting its dependencies now.

Update: I don't expect gigabit speed from this. It would be great to get confirmation that it was running at.

this probably should not be in the "Nitty Gritty"

even official docs, show WD is a 10/100
not 1000

also you have to account for the very underpowered cpu

btw way 10MB is approx 100 mbps

and yes 5Mb/s is unfortunately normal depending what protocol you use
I think the highest I ever got was 7 - 8 Mb/s via FTP

Thank you KAD for reminding me that there is a bits and bytes problem here. I just I may have fixated on switch saying the link speed was 10meg.
2.80 MBytes/s = 22.4 Mbitsps
Feel free to move this to the appropriate board.

The firmware doesn't have ethtool, but you can check the speed and duplex the NIC negociated by looking through dmesg (reboot if you don't get any output):
Code: Select all
root@Deneb:/root# dmesg | grep eth0
eth0: link up, 100Mbps, full-duplex, lpa 0x45E1
