guess what super notorious 'bug' i just fixed ^_^

Postby b-rad.cc » Fri Feb 11, 2011 5:51 pm

So I'm sitting here today a bit bored and wanted to take on a serious challenge...and what better, extremely annoying bug to try and tackle than the notorious two-level-thumbs bug

I'm not all that good with asm, and even less good with mipsel asm so I wasn't sure where this would lead to...started out by disassembling dmaosd to try and find where the thumb gen code was located and if it was even possible to fix. I headed off in the wrong direction a handful of times, but eventually found the subroutine that generates the thumbs. Little (LOT) of pen & paper trace out, referring back & forth to mips asm guide, and then light bulb went off overhead. Essentially there was a loop that counted slashes in the path name, and if that length was less than 6 then NO THUMB FOR YOU! :o Patched that spot so that it only checks for 4 levels and voila, the two level thumbs bug is fixed!!!!! :ugeek:

 :P :D

Now to find a real challenge! 8-)

Well done Brad,

I know looking back is not good , but if this can be fixed in 1.02.21/ 0.4.3.1 then I would have everything I need, moviesheets and icons :D

Keep up the great work.

0.4.3.1 is old, and has a lot of broken features in it (such as YoutubeHD and Shoutcast).

It's kind'a like the Matrix(tm)... some people see assembly as just a stream of 1s and 0s and others (like Steve Gibson, GRC), with a single glance, see a building and can point to the code for the door knobs used on the third floor, and to some of us (myself included) we see a bunch of pixels and it takes some time and effort to reconstruct that we're looking at the header of a Cindy Crawford gif :geek:

Nice Job B-Rad on resurrecting some of this almost lost art!

WooHoo!!!!!! Way to go, B-RAD!!! Your Genius is showing!!! :ugeek:

And all it took was a little hard work and persistence. Guess that explains why WD has not been able to fix it. ;)
