USB Autoswitch?

Postby fox294 » Sat Jan 12, 2013 10:56 am

I have two WDTV (not live) gen2 with the WDLXTV custom firmware. What I want to do is use a usb autoswitch to share one HDD between both WDTVs (in two different rooms). The autoswitch I purchased is intended for use on two PCs (of course). On the PCs, you must install a software package that allows the computer sending the command to assume control of the USB switch. For my purposes, I simply want the USB switch to route the HDD to whichever WDTV is currently turned on (there’s no time when both would be in use). Is this at all possible? If so, what would I need to do to enable it?

Post a link to that software so we can get an idea, and also search if it works under linux, but i don't think it will work easily. First i thought you were looking for usb_modeswitch, but that's something else.

You can always connect the disk to one wdtv and share it over the network with the other. It will work even if the wdtv is in standby

Since it seems there is no software for linux it's not possible to switch this gear from WDTV.

1. Would the media accessed over the network stream at 1080p and allow for reasonable ffd/rwd?
2. If so, what hardware needs to be purchased to network/share/connect to the WDTV?

As long as your network is wired and you're using a reasonable protocol, like NFS, then 1080p with FF/Rew will work without problems.

In terms of network hardware - it depends on your needs. If you just want to be able to use the HDD from one WD to the other and have no need for internet access/network connection to them, then your cheapest option is to build a crossover ethernet cable and manually configure IP addresses on both WDTVs.

If you want more, a cheap 100Mbps switch/router will do the trick as well.

Is there a tutorial somewhere on networking the WDTV g2? (since there's no ethernet port).
