Gen2 and TP-Link TL-WN821N

Postby cheveguerra » Thu Nov 04, 2010 1:24 pm

Hi everybody,

I have a Gen2 with 0.4.3.2 and I am trying to connect a TP-Link TL-WN821N USB Wireless adapter (Atheros Otus compatible), my net.config is this:

Code: Select all
/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
WIRELESS=TRUE

#######################################################
#######################################################
############# WIRELESS SETTINGS #######################
#######################################################
#######################################################

## Enable ONE driver below depending on your wireless adapter

## for rt3070 wireless adapters:
#modprobe rt3070sta

## for rt2870 wireless adapters:
#modprobe rt2870sta

## for arus_lnx (atheros)compatible wireless:
modprobe arusb_lnx

## SSID:
SSID=myAP

## your auth mode:
#AUTHMODE=WPAPSK
AUTHMODE=WEP

## your encryption (WPA[2]/PSK only) type:
#ENCRYPTION_TYPE=TKIP
#ENCRYPTION_TYPE=AES

## WEP / WPA-PSK key
ENCRYPTION_KEY=mykey

#######################################################
##
## Dynamic IP Configuration:
#DHCP=yes
## Static IP Configuration:  (only if not DHCP)
DHCP=no
IP=192.168.3.50
GW=192.168.3.1
NM=255.255.255.0
#(not sure on this one, but just check your ipconfig /all of any connected Windows machine if in doubt)
DNS1=200.52.66.128
DNS2=200.52.68.190
## attempt to set jumbo frames
#MTU=9000
/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

The green led in the wireless adapter is slowly flashing, and according to the manual this means that the drivers are loaded but there is no traffic going through the adapter ... but I cannot ping it and the AP does not register a connection.
I have tried with and without authentication, I tried to add these lines:

ifconfig $MDEV up
iwconfig $MDEV essid myAP

But it just doesn't connect, since I have no access to the WDTV I cannot know if there are any messages or logs.

I copied in a Flashdrive the EXT3-Boot version because I read somewhere that this way I would get a log (messages.txt) in the flashdrive but thus far there is no log file.

I tested the USB adapter in my laptop and it works fine, so that's not the problem.

Any ideas what am I doing wrong?

Hi everybody again,

Ok, maybe that was a too general question .. . so here one more especific:

Since I have installed the 0.4.3.2 firmware what sintaxis should I use?

* Number 1
Code: Select all
ifconfig $MDEV up
iwconfig $MDEV essid Virus_Alert
iwconfig $MDEV essid Virus_Alert key "s:gpobuscawifi1"
wpa_supplicant -Bw -Dotus -i$MDEV -c/boot/wpa_supplicant.conf

* Number 2
Code: Select all
WIRELESS=TRUE
modprobe arusb_lnx
SSID=Virus_Alert
AUTHMODE=WPAPSK
ENCRYPTION_KEY=thepassword

None of them work, but if I know which one would never work, I can keep trying with the good one.

And another one:

How can I enable the log file (messages.txt)??

I I copied the EXT3-BOOT_G2-0.4.3.2 files to an USB flashdrive and booted from there, the spalsh screen shows that it is booting from the EXT3-Boot file, but I do not get any messages.txt file.

Ok, after a lot of testing . . . asking .. trying . . . and waiting . . . it seems that the USB wireless adapter that I have is NOT SUPPORTED.

I have the TP-Link TL-WN821N ver 2.8 based in the Atheros Otus **RevA2** ( pid-vid : 07d1-3a09 )

The one supported is RevA ( pid-vid : 07d1-3c10 )

I searched for a way to add the driver to the firmware . . but it SEEMS ;) that it is a little bit out of my league.

Then if I want to use this USB Adapter I need to wait for RevA2 to be included or buy another one.

So here is another question:

Is it likely that this driver will be included in a foreseeable future?

or that an app.bin is made for this driver?

Mmm ... now that I think about it, I guess that's what the "Requests" forum is for.

Well, I will try my luck there.

this pid:vid is supported in 0.4.5.0 ;)

Thanks a lot b-rad.cc, I just downloaded and installed it.

It works great, now I can connect to the WDTV over the wireless network ... but now I have another problem:

I couldn't make it work this way:

Code: Select all
WIRELESS=TRUE
modprobe arusb_lnx
SSID=Virus_Alert
AUTHMODE=WPAPSK
ENCRYPTION_KEY=thepassword

But after some testing this worked WITHOUT encryption:

Code: Select all
ifconfig $MDEV up
iwconfig $MDEV essid theAP

But whenever I tried to add WEP encryption:

Code: Select all
iwconfig $MDEV essid theAP key "s:thepassword"

It just didn't work, I tried with quotes in the password and without quotes, with the "s:" and without the "s:", the encryption in the access point is WEP 64bit, I tried to change the encryption to text (not hex) and again with and without the quotes and "s:", I even tried to change to WEP 128 bit but without luck, the only way I could make it work was disabling encryption . . . is there a way to enable encryption and make it work?

## your encryption (WPA[2]/PSK only) type:
#ENCRYPTION_TYPE=TKIP
#ENCRYPTION_TYPE=AES

Thanks for answering Marlborosat,

I am using this sintaxis:

Code: Select all
iwconfig $MDEV essid theAP key "s:thepassword"

... and everywhere I looked, it said that if I was using WEP I had to add the "key 's:password'" part, but nothing of encryption_type . . . I think it was for WPA that I needed to set the encryption_type.

should I add this line?

Code: Select all
wpa_supplicant -Bw -Dotus -i$MDEV -c/boot/wpa_supplicant.conf

and if I do so, do I have to create a wpa_suplicant.conf file?
