Need help with wi-fi card

Postby FireBlast » Wed Jul 06, 2011 9:50 am

Hi everybody

I think i broke my wifi dongle. Let me explain. I've got a dlink dwa-140 (rt2870, vid\pid 07d1:3c0a) attached to wdtv live (1.02.21-0.4.7.3). Two days ago it worked fine until i saw a information that i could make from my dlink dwa-140 to a phillips pta01 by changing in eeprom pid\vid. I've made it to test if it would work on my phillips tv 'cause it's only one dongle which works with this tv. So i've entered the following commands

previous settings
Code: Select all
# iwpriv ra0 e2p 208=0x0471
# iwpriv ra0 e2p 20A=0x209e

and i changed them to vid\pid 0471:209e Philips. After reboot my wlan0 interface disappeared. But lsusb shows usb device attached to wdtv.

Code: Select all
# lsusb
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 1058:1021 Western Digital Technologies, Inc.
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 0471:209e Philips
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 0000:0000

So after that i can't change setting back 'cause there is no wlan0 interface for iwpriv command. Driver\module doesn't load at startup
Code: Select all
# lsmod |grep rt
empty

I would like to know is it possible to load rt2870 driver for the device with my new vid\pid? Any help?

I can. But the solution is not wdlxtv related. I've done it on ubuntu by recompiling old drivers because of new ones don't permit to use 'iwpriv wlan0 e2p' command.
So my method allow to use any device of any vendor (based on rt28xx chip) with wdlxtv. If it's usefull l'll desribe how i've done it.

It's not "for me", but I guess other (more experienced) users can take benefit from your sharing to the community ;)

The main question of the topic was the possibility to load rt2870sta module with the pid\vid not included in driver rt2870sta.ko
I don't find the solution how it is possible in wdlxtv.

****** IMPORTANT ******
If you are not familiar with hardware, it is recommanded not to modify hardware default value.
It may damage hardware.

If you want to know how to change pid\vid of the device i described it in the first post via "iwpriv" command
Code: Select all
iwpriv (interface) e2p (EEPROM adress)=(data)

I should say that driver must accept (be compiled) private ioctl. Vid data situated in eeprom at adress 208, pid at 20a. More information on command you can find http://rt2870linux.googlecode.com/hg/sta_ate_iwpriv_usage.txt
