Hdparm error (invalid argument)

Postby FireBlast » Sat May 28, 2011 1:38 pm

Yesterday i wanted to change MultSect option on my usb-sata hdd WD Elements. When i entered "hdparm -i /dev/sda1" i've got a message "HDIO_GET_IDENTITY failed: Invalid argument" and most of other hdparm's options returned the same error "invalid argument". So i would like to know why and how can i solve this problem?

My FW 1.02.21 0.4.7.3

/dev/sda is your HDD. /dev/sda1 is a partition on it.

You must access the device itself, not one of its partitions.

Thanks for your comment. But the error is the same. Any other advice?

AFAIK, hdparm isn't guaranteed to fully work over USB. The ATA command set implementation will depend on the interface controller.

So it's not a kernel bug? Even though i can't look at hdd info!? I doubt that it's a usb-sata controller because i can see SMART status of hdd on my BB.

*Found this (man hdparm in ubuntu)
hdparm provides a command line interface to various hard disk ioctls supported by the Linux SATA/PATA/SAS "libata" subsystem and the older IDE driver subsystem. Some options may work correctly only with the latest kernels.

I can say that, with the same FW, I regularly use an hdparm sleep OR stanby command to spin down my HDD (2,5'' USB on port 2, 500GB) as a POWER_DOWN_ACTION10.
I get this error when I supply the USB pendrive's /dev.

EDIT: exact command:
Code: Select all
dev=$(mount | grep <<UUID-here!!!>>> | head -1 | cut -d " " -f 1) && hdparm -y $dev

try using sdparm instead of hdparm.
