Thank you mad_ady, I am searching all the evening where could be the problem.
I've edited dhe picture_run.xml so, taht it contains only text object without any variables. So it should work. But it reboots all the time.

I also tried to edit the picture_browse.xml. It contains also a file inc_nav.xml which isn't visible anywhere. I removed the line also, but the reboot persists.

Is there someone who could tell me the name of the xml file read while opening the picture in big size?
Why shows shortly the background and then reboots?

FOUND IT!

I've replaced every single file that had something to do with picture against the original ones that were working.
And finally found that a small png file, that was causing the reboot. That was the slideshow_time_mark (or sth like that)
I experimented that with original width (of 2 px I think) it is working well, but as I change it to something little wider it stops and reboots.
Funny, because in audio_run.xml I created previously new progressbar with different width and heigth, and also the mark is few bucks wider and it works perfectly there.

So, in the end I leaved the picture mark it as it is, but changed only original progressbar graphic and it works as expected.

Actually I have only one matter:

is it possible to compile the OSD with the FW so that it loads faster and does not need any xx.osd.bin file?

Please answer :-)

Thanks

Yes, it is possible to bundle your OSD into the flashed firmware, but you will have to "cook" your own firmware for this. There are a few people who have done it (I personally haven't), and it's reasonably safe (but you should have a serial cable ready in case your firmware bricks your device). You'll have to keep an eye on the total firmware size, so it doesn't exceed the flash capacity.

Most likely dzebrys can help you with instructions:

Aaaahh... stupid me  I didn't see/read carefully (or had other matters that day).
So there is a script somewhere, but for G3 allready.

Yes, I an an n00b and after couple of minutes found only some repacking threads and md5 sums... that sounds serious and I don't want brick my device..
I don't have any serial cable or network adapter steady to failsafe when it stalls.

I saw the B-Rad's FW with some standard OSD comes faster to life than with addidional osd.bin.

Would you do it (repack) for me? I would PM you the osd.bin file..

Ask dzebrys to do it. Though you'd have to find sombody stupid brave enough to test it on a gen1...

Do you mean, that it will brick my device?
Or it wasn't tested on G1 at all?

When flashing a firmware there are always risks. Some problems might include:
* firmware is too big to be flashed and it manages to write what ever fits into NAND. You find this out when you boot
* startup scripts may have problems causing your system not to boot

Most of these issues can be solved with a serial cable and a bit of patience (so it wouldn't be a permanent brick). B-Rad managed to create some permanent bricks when playing around, so there is always some risk.

As far as I know nobody except b-rad packed firmwares for gen1 (being an older, less common player). The build procedure might be the same as for live/live plus, but I don't know.
One thing you can try out is this - once the firmware is built, you can boot it from an attached USB and see if it boots and works ok. Then you can try to flash it.

You can follow these instructions with a gen1 firmware and see if you run into any problems.
Good luck! (Remember, success is for the brave!)

I know the risks (I'm updating from time to time my other devices).
I thought that unpacking and replacing the /osd should not destroy the firmware.
I have some fears that if I unpack it and then repack again, the bootability is lost (such conclusion is comming from windows I think).

But the script/method looks little bit complicated.
I've tried yesterday to unpack the original WDTV firmware, so I stripped the first 32 bytes and then I was able to mount it (-o loop). So I think, this could work in the opposite way.

We will see :-D

I'm not sure but I think the firmware files for Gen1 are packed different from the one for Live/Plus since b-rad wrote back then that it took him some time to decode the new format. (But I think it's mainly the cramfs format that changed (16k blocks)).

Awesome work, you inspired me to install my WDTV (gen 1) in my Hyundai Santa Fe (http://s176.photobucket.com/albums/w184/crackinhedz/Car%20DVD%20Headrest/?albumview=slideshow)...any chance you could share with me your secret? I would love to have the Hyundai logo show up. Also, is it possible to include [minimalistic] in the custom firmware instead of having to keep on usb drive to load each time you use it?

Thanks for any advice
