I think it used to work in versions prior to But then a bug had been found where it would disconnect the drive even if it wasn't supposed to and could risk data corruption. And the fix prevents the drive from being powered off in later versions, unless you do very specific steps.

The option I was talking about is in firmware, Webend -> Configuration -> System - like in this screenshot:

thank you my friend. but there is no point in helping me. i activated this command in the settings. still the usb stick is being powered on even after thewd is turned off. we did try, we failed. i will live with that. perhaps a newer firmware at some point will save the day who knows...
perhaps i have a very old wd live (it is indeed very old) with some really old kernel...
anyway, thank you again
