WDLXTV as file server (access via Windows 7)

Postby Endeavour79 » Sun Jul 08, 2012 1:21 am

Hi,

I did some research in the Wiki and the forum but didn't find a real solution for
How-to access USB drives attached to WDLXTV on a Windows 7 client?

Any recommendations, how I can map the USB drive? I want to do some basic file copy/move/rename/unrar options more comfortable via Windows PC.
Any solution for this?

I am running 1.05.. 5.0.0 firmware on WDLXTV-Live

Cheers, End :?:

Thank. I've seen and read this article. But as far as I understand this does not work for my setup.

Samba/NFS needs ext3 formatted drive and the Virtual USB App needs firmware lower than 1.05.
I am using a NTFS formatted drive ad the 1.05..5.0.0 firmware.

I've seen the FTP method, this works for up&download.. But not for moving cmd. or unrar etc.

Hi Endeaver, I'm not trying to stalk you! Your setup is same as mine and you are finding similar issues to me so heres my solution if you need to keep the drive as ntfs.

You need to partition the drive into 2 parts - ntfs and ext3. The ext3 portion does not have to be large. i have mine set at about 500mb on a 2tb hard drive. With this method windows recognises both partitions using samba.

I store my bin files on the ext3 portion and transmission downloads on the ntfs portion.

Windows will still recognise the ntfs portion if directly plugged into a computer.

Th free Easeus partition manager allows you to shrink your current ntfs partition without loosing your current files and create an extra ext3 partition. http://www.partition-tool.com/download.htm

This is not correct...
You don't need Virtual USB App for any of this, it's needed if you want to xmount a share on the WDTV not when sharing from the WDTV.

You only need ext3 formated drive for sharing with NFS, you can share a NTFS formated drive with samba (CIFS).
Even stock firmware can do this...

I had this type of issue when i was trying to show a second usb drive which was formatted to NTFS. http://forum.wdlxtv.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=6822 In the end the only way that worked for me was adding an extra ext3 partition. I'm sure you are right about the above quote, just unfortunate that i could not get it to work for myself...

Thanks recliq,

the information in the Wiki was misleading. It works with Samba and NTFS.

I just wonder, why can't I write/move/create files? I did set the Samba option to read&write on the config page.
Do I need to configure anything else?

Cheers
