Is free Hulu content playable with custom firmware?

Postby rans0m » Sun Mar 18, 2012 12:42 am

Hi all,
I am interested mainly on free content on hulu. The generic firmware gives you access to your hulu account for tv shows and movies, but I wondered if there was a plugin to watch the free content on hulu? Or if the firmware has a webbrowser built in if this content could be accessed using the webbrowser. The custom firmware gives tons of functions I am amazed at, but really have not plans to use at the moment. Can the custom firmware only play videos on websites that are designed with the wdtv in mind?
Thanks for your replies in advance.

I didn't know Hulu had free content. Can you give me some example links?
If it's really free (and accessible via a web browser), and if it is in a supported video format, then yes, it would be possible to write a UMSP plugin to handle playback.
There are a lot of plugins built to make content available on certain sites on the WDTV - so, no, the site doesn't have to be designed to be wdtv-friendly, but if it is, it surely helps! :)

Hi,

Example categories
http://www.hulu.com/tv?src=topnav
http://www.hulu.com/movies?src=topnav
http://www.hulu.com/browse/tv?src=topnav
http://www.hulu.com/browse/network?src=topnav
http://www.hulu.com/genres/tv?src=topnav
http://www.hulu.com/browse/popular/tv?src=topnav
http://www.hulu.com/popular/episodes?src=topnav

This is a partial list of links most being for the TV content. The movie list also breaks down to popular, recent, trailers, documentaries and other way.
The menu system breaks it down quite a few ways, by most popular and newests and such.

Example shows
http://www.hulu.com/the-simpsons
http://www.hulu.com/greys-anatomy

I have not spent much time here since they went for pay, but they still have a pretty good collection of movies, tv, and clips that are free. I think most of the current shows are free for two weeks, but not for mobile devices.
Most of the actual pages for a show are in the format, episodes, clips, you might also like. I was just kinda surprised I could not access it from the hulu plus gizmo in the wdtv firmware without having a paid account. T

Hope that helps.

Sadly, I can't help you because:
We're sorry, currently our video library can only be streamed within the United States

I'm sure a US-based dev can help you...

Ah,
Thanks for looking. Hopefully another Dev will be interested in this project. Hulu has a ton of free content and I am really surprised no one has already coded a plugin for it. Should I submit there somewhere on the forums? Anyway, thanks for looking at it.

You can make a request at the UMSP subforum. More devs are browsing that than noob central.
