serial connection question

Postby retroboy32 » Wed Feb 15, 2012 4:23 pm

Okay... long story... but basically
My WDTV Live is bricked, so I am trying the serial connection.

I have read and followed the instructions posted on the wiki regarding pinouts and using putty to connect via a serial connection.

I got a console screen, but I can't read the contents.

I have set the settings acording to the wiki:
Using COM1
Speed: 115200, Data: 8, Parity: None, Stop 1, Flow Control: None

Here is the output:

Code: Select all
=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~= PuTTY log 2012.02.15 19:11:58 =~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=

This looks like wrong speed settings...

Check speed settings on the Com port as well as in putty.

You are using a 3.3V TTL Serial adaptor, right?

Recliq,

No... I am using a serial cable out of my COM port... Basically a stripped Cisco Console Cable (DB9 to RJ45 with RJ45 end stripped).
I have the pinouts for the cable.

The wiki says that the +5V pin (or 3.3V pin) should not be connected...
I'm using a CDROM audio cable as my board interface.

I have connected the TX, RX, and GND only (according to the wiki post), using the DB9 serial cable with the CDROM audio cable end...

I know the RX and TX wires are correct becasue if I bridge them, I get "readble" text back in my console window in Putty when I type on the keyboard.

Re: serial connection question

Postby recliq » Thu Feb 16, 2012 11:36 am

You should read the wiki more carefully, you need a 3.3V TTL serial interface not a normal 5V one.
Maybe you just toasted the serial chip on WDTV, maybe you're lucky....

By any means don't further try to connect to your computer serial port!

Will add warning to the wiki that you should never connect to your PC serial port tough...seems it can't be stressed enough.

Recliq,

Thanks for the information... and for updating the wiki page... it wasn't extremely clear in the wiki (IMHO)...

You may also want to remove the statement but you can use whatever cable you want/have. or maybe just change it to say, but you can use any 3.3V TTL-Serial cable you want/have.

Although, I'm not sure I understand why a console cable won't work... You don't connect the power cable regardless of the cable you use (3.3V or 5V). I only connected the TX, RX, and GRND (as indicated in the wiki)...

That refers to the voltage used by the levels, not to power supply. A "real" (read: RS-232) serial port as on the PC uses up to -12V to +12V to denote 0 (low state) and 1 (high state). A tad more... "potent". :) So it might have trouble reading data using only -3.3V to 3.3V. And it's talking a bit louder than your WDTV is expecting.

Also, TTL denotes 0/3V, if I'm not mistaken, as opposed to real RS_232 going in the negative to denote a low state.

I am interested in this thread because I ordered a Nokia CA-42 from EBay a couple of days ago and expect to be going through similar problems in a few days.

TTL = 0 to 5V; LVTTL = 0 to 3.3V(LV low voltage). RS232 com port -12 to +12. The switching point Vt is somewhere in between the the high and low. It looks like the com port is switching, but is the wrong speed. Try 9600 like another thread suggested.

I got my CA-40 today and soldered it up it to a CD audio cable like the wiki. It works great with the Hyper Terminal that comes with winXP. 115200 speed worked. I remembered what the problem with the com port is. RS232 -12 is a one so when connected to ttl the one and zero are swapped. The stop bit becomes a start bit so the data streams at the right rate, but garbage. I worked on mainframe comm equipment for a couple of years, but it was 40+ years ago. When we hacked into ttl we simply made an inverter out of pnp transistor. Yes, you could see the transistors in the comm equipment back then.

Thanks again for all of your help...
So... bottom line... I have to get a 3.3V TTL serial cable...
Will do...

finally received my CA-42 cable in the mail today... man, things take awhile to travel to Canada from china...
Anyway... hooked up the serial port and here is the output:
