wdlxtv/wdlxtv

Couldn't find it in the wiki ... Ok, there maybe is a lot of possibilities once you installed Xdlxtv but it's still very "rough".

but it's still very "rough".

Users are encouraged to make changes and submit patches. The current devs can do only so much...
Sadly not many users contribute back with code/documentation/improvements...

P.S. You should have seen the firmware 1.5 years ago, before the webend configurator... :)

Yes and there's tons of info we provide and tell everyone to read where you can find it...
Most important of those is the sticky announcement here in n00b central titled

Yeah the wiki is interesting but I couldn't find the info I needed (even if it was sometimes written inside) :?

That's why a forum is so helpful, that's why you are helpful. Basicaly, I think there's one simple thing missing for XDLXTV ... a clear review of :

1- what is XDLXTV
2- what will be the result on your screen (with screenshots)
3- how to configure it

Once you had a look at this review, you'll know if you want to spend hours of configuration or not and if you eventualy want to continue, it will motivate you all along.

Of course, you are going to tell me that "everything is on the wiki" but well, try to search for "xdlxtv" on google : you won't have a quick answer on what it is exactly. The wiki is great but you need to take 2 hours to read it.

Now I could finaly get to the configurator and still ... nothing is working the way I excpected, everytime I click on an option, it took like 15 secondes to display and sometimes it's empty.

Maybe it's because I'm not the "target audience" of xdlxtv (but I'm an IT ...) ? For me, XDLXTV is a very complicate firmware for the WDTV live, which is destined to those who aren't comfortable with configuring a real media player at home ... That's why I was excpecting something way more easy to install.

TLDR : I don't want to be rude by critisizing the firmware but as a new user, I was lost and the wiki didn't help me so much : it felt like the windows help, explaining things you already know and not saying anything about the other problems you can meet.

did you actually read the wiki, I don't think so

the first thing it says is
What is WDLXTV?
WDLXTV is a homebrew firmware developed by the community for the WDTV line of products from Western Digital. Its goal is to add a lot of new features on top of what is already provided by WD, such as movie sheets, Bittorrent, streaming from external online sources, and a lot more.

and after 8 post, you still don't even know the name WDLXTV as seen in every one of your post you call it
XDLXTV

yeah google isn't going to find info on XDLXTV because it doesn't exist

searching for WDLXTV the top five links are official info either on this forum or the wiki

I read the wiki.

What I meant by "a clear review of the wdlxtv" is something more ... sexy than a simple sentence in a wiki. Something explaining : "okay, your wdtv can look like that but you'll have to do that, that, and then that". It's a suggestion. As I said, maybe I'm not the target audience of the wdlxtv but after 2 days trying to configure it, I'm going back on the official firmware.

That's life (and it may be a relief for you ;) ) but if I had a different documentation from the begining I could make a better decision and I would have chosen between :

- it's a lot of work, I'll have to prepare myself, read the whole wiki but it's worth the effort
- it's a lot of work, I don't want to spend so much time on this

The wiki told me first that it was really easy : you just flash the wdtv with the new firmware, you setup a few thing and it's done. It wasn't that easy and I had to read the whole wiki for something that's still not working.

I'm not saying that cause I'm pissed off, not even do I say that to piss YOU off :)
But I think something interesting can be done for the next users that will discover the Wdlxtv. Like a tutorial with pictures, something giving the desire to go further. For example, now that I can connect to the web frontend, I see that no option is working (it's just displaying empty boxes) :

I searched the wiki but couldn't find any information. Maybe there is informations in the wiki, I don't know but I couldn't find it. So I don't know if I forgot a point or if this is actually a bug from Wdlxtv.

With an easy "step by step" tutorial, it would be easier to identify the problem and to understand if I did something wrong.

And about Wdlxtv and Xdlxtv it was a mistake on the forum, I did type "WDLXTV" on google and as you said, all I can find is the same informations I already got on the wiki (which didn't helped me) and an horrible video on youtube.

Anyway, sorry for the disturbance and have a good day.

Hi all,

I am new to this but I have been reading thoroughly through this forum and through the readme included in every release.

My problem is that it does not register the new firmware update on my usb.

Currently I have official firmware release 1.10.13 on my WDTV Live.

I have done following:

1. Bought a brand new USB today.
2. Formated (full) it in FAT32
3. Copied .fff, .ver and .bin to the usb (with .ver edited to version 2.10.13)
4. Plugged out the power cable.
5. Plugin the usb
6. Plugged in the power cable

When it turns on it takes me to the main menu with a message running on top of the screen saying 'compiling media library'.

I seriously don't know what I am doing wrong?

Hope you guys can help me out.

Thanks,
Marc

Problem is you have a live streaming, which isn't supported by WDLXTV: http://wiki.wdlxtv.com/Y_U_NOT_SUPPORT_MY_DEVICE

Wow, what a bummer. Thanks.

I am having trouble finding a WD device with built-in wireless networking able to be firmware flashed.

Is this even possible?

Thank you and sorry for asking noobish questions.

There is no wdtv with builtin wifi that works with wdlxtv. You can add an external wifi (see the supported list of wifi dongles) to wdtv live or plus.
