Specific WD TV Live / HDD Question

Postby chuckguy17 » Sun Mar 05, 2017 11:41 pm

I have a specific situation that might not be easily answerable, but I'm going to give it a shot by posting anyways.

I have amassed a collection of movies, TV shows, and documentaries over the past 8 or so years ... slightly over 4TB in size.

I have this on a 5TB Seagate External Drive (Model: SRD00F2, P/N: 1KBAP4-500).
And I use a WD TV Live (Model: WDBAAN0000NBK) with 1.05.04_V_WDLXTV_LIVE-0.5.2.0 to play it on my TV.

I've given my parent's and my girlfriend's parents the same exact setup (same exact drive and media player).
So this I have three exact setups of this working beautifully.

My friend, seeing my collection, wanted a copy.
I told him I would buy what he needed and set up him up.
So I bought the same setup now for the 4th time.

But this time after I cloned the hard drive, this new hard drive WILL NOT read on any of the WD TV Lives (Model: WDBAAN0000NBK) with WDLXTV.
On close inspection, this new HDD, while being the same size and model number, has a part number incremented by 1.
So it is a 5TB Seagate External Drive (Model: SRD00F2, P/N: 1KBAP4-501) versus 5TB Seagate External Drive (Model: SRD00F2, P/N: 1KBAP4-500).

This new drive will read fine on a separate WDTV Live Streaming (Model: WDBHG70000NBK) with stock firmware though.

I made sure the HDD dirty bit is not set multiple times. I know this can be a problem.

I'm trying to understand how/why this new drive can't be read on the WDTV Live.
You would think that with the same size drive, with the same model number, and same content ... that there should be no problem.
What in the world could Seagate have done when they upped the part number from 1KBAP4-500 to 1KBAP4-501??!?

Hmm, What does dmesg say after you plug in your new drive? Do you see the partition table?
Paste back the output of
Code: Select all
dmesg
fdisk -l
cat /tmp/messages.txt
ls -l /dev/sd*

Can you mount the disk on a PC?

How did you copy the old this to the new one? If you did a binary copy (e.g. dd of the whole disk) you might run into the situation where the newer disk has fewer sectors (space) available than the old disk (by a few is enough). This will cause a binary copy of the disk to fail to write the whole disk and you end up with a corrupted GPT table and maybe a corrupted partition. What tool did you use to copy the disk?

Wow, thanks for the quick response and instructions on troubleshooting!

Can you mount the disk on a PC?
Yes, the drive mounts without issue on PCs. It is NTFS.

How did you copy the old this to the new one?
I shouldn't have said clone. I didn't use cloning software.
When I got the drive, I did a format through Windows 7 to get rid of the junk software that comes on the drive.
Then I used a file synchronization software called "Allway Sync" v14.2.1 to copy everything over.

The following is the output of the commands you gave me.
Before running these commands, the drive was plugged into the WD TV Live, I heard it "spin up", and the drive LED was on.

Re: Specific WD TV Live / HDD Question

Postby chuckguy17 » Mon Mar 06, 2017 7:06 pm

It looks like the old drive that works uses 4096-byte hardware sectors.
The new drive that doesn't work uses 512-byte hardware sectors.

Or at least that's what the WD TV Live "thinks".

It looks like the sector size is to blame. The WDTV can only see 2TB of your new disk and can't understand the partition table.
Not sure what you can do about it, except connect the disk to a NAS and export the data via network to be accessible to the WDTV...

Aw, that's disappointing. Thanks for the advice though.

Is that weird to you that the new drive uses 512-byte hardware sectors?
Especially since the SAME model drive of the earlier part number uses 4096-byte.

I was searching the internet and it seems that 512-byte hardware sectors is old technology.
Somewhere around 2011 drives started to switch over to "Advanced Format" 4096-byte hardware sectors ... I think.

I ran the following in Windows 10.
Physical bytes per sector are both 4K, it is the logical bytes that are different.
The fact that they are both physically 4K and the "logical" is different ... does that mean I can change it?
I'm having trouble finding a clear answer on the internet.

The new drive that doesn't work:

C:\>fsutil fsinfo sectorInfo H:
LogicalBytesPerSector : 512
PhysicalBytesPerSectorForAtomicity : 4096
PhysicalBytesPerSectorForPerformance : 4096
FileSystemEffectivePhysicalBytesPerSectorForAtomicity : 4096
Device Alignment : Aligned (0x000)
Partition alignment on device : Aligned (0x000)

Compared to the older drive:

C:\>fsutil fsinfo sectorInfo I:
LogicalBytesPerSector : 4096
PhysicalBytesPerSectorForAtomicity : 4096
PhysicalBytesPerSectorForPerformance : 4096
FileSystemEffectivePhysicalBytesPerSectorForAtomicity : 4096
Device Alignment : Aligned (0x000)
Partition alignment on device : Aligned (0x000)

Hmm, newer disk should have 4K sectors, especially when they are as big as yours. Not sure what you can do about it, but here is what I would try:
1. Search your manufacturer's website for a firmware upgrade possibility
2. Repartition the disk and create a 2TB partition and test it with the WDTV (It can be GPT)
3. Repartitionn the disk and create a 4TB partition (manually) and copy over the data, instead of doing a HDD clone.
