Linux Aplications?

Postby Xplorer4x4 » Fri Jun 15, 2012 8:45 am

I recentley made the switch from Windows to Kubuntu. In windows I had a plethora of audio video tools that I sometimes had to rely on to make certain videos WD Live friendly. For example, sometimes I have videos that play the video stream fine, but not the audio. In this case I ran the MKV through something like GotSent or more recentley I find that I need to run the video through "Redbox.NET"(Link) to remux the video, then I have to run the resulting MP4 through MKVMerge to clean it up so to speak and make the video WD Live friendly. Fortunatley this method does not rencode the video, only the audio which help eliminate some of the time needed. It may sounds like alot of work, but it is merley a few clicks and a short time but it works.

Anyways, can any one recomend some comparable linux native apps? I tried using GotSent and Redbox.NET under Wine as temp solutions but they fail to run.

Thanks for the response. mctt. I use AVIDemux alot, but not for this type of purpouse as AVIDemux relies on the usr to configure the variables. Programs like GotSent or Redbox.NET set the variables for you. I have never really looked in to just how they set the variables but I assume it automaticly calculates the optimum bitrate and such. AVIDemux, imo is a bit more geared towards makeing clips. For example I have used it alot to cut matches from UFC shows.

Oh and I am glad you mentioned mp4box(which soem of said apps are simply GUIs for). I was really hopping for a GUI. I dont mind resorting to the command line for certain tasks but this is one of the times I really want a GUI if at all popssible.

You can just use "Auto" and then PSP profile or something similar with Avidemux. I do know what you mean.
I came from Windows using VirtualDub, Nandub, Gordian Knot. Handbrake is good and cross platform.

Here is some food for thought:
http://alternativeto.net/category/video/?platform=linux

Also, Azureus/Vuze will process to specific devices and is quite automated. It is memory and processor intensive but a fairly simple option once you get the hang of it.

I also tried Transcoder http://alternativeto.net/software/transcoder/?platform=linux and if I remember correctly added a bunch of profiles for different devices e.g HTC Desire.

But to be honest never really found anything nearly as reliable as VirtualDubMod for working with media.

You are exactly on the right track VirtualDub(and at one time VirtualDubMod), honestley I had a stack full of apps for various purpouses/files. BeeHappy is another one I would like to replace. Honestley I am bit surprised. Given the nature of linux I expected to have access to more of these one click encoder type programs, not less.

Interesting link, thanks.

And I love Vuze despite what any one says about it. If you know what you are doing you can unload soem of the stock plug ins and use the old azereus ui to trim the fat so to speak, but still have a highly configurable client. I haven't really looked in to the Vuze encoder though. Never had a reason as I hate the Vuze UI and add so many great encoders at my disposal. Guess I might have to see what I can access from the old azereus UI as I really do not want to use the Vuze UI.

Search the forum for "mkv header compression" and you will find a lot of info how to remux mkvs in linux. ;)

I will give it a try and see what I come up with, but it is not header compression that is the issue at all. For header compression/header stripping, my method is the same..set the option in mkvmerge so it always disabled header compression, and then run it through mkvmerge. What I am reffering to is encoding standards the WD doesn't like. For example, in this case, I have a PPV event where I have only 2 (credible) cappers/sources. One is a scene group. They release in 720p. There weekly content plays back fine, it is the once a month PPV caps that the audio does not play right out of the box, so to speak. A simple remux of the audio(Redbox.NET), and quick clean up of the resulting file(MkvMerge) and I am good to go. The other source, they claim they follow the new(as of a few months back) iTunes encoing standards. They release in 1080p, but the quality is no better then the 720p scene release, and slightly larger to. Actually, there quality is lower imo because fast passed scenes are overley compressed and get very grainy. Although slow moving scenes are typically on par with the previous 720p source. As they are not a scene group, they release in MP4s that are not WD Friendly. Well atleast the weekly stuff is, just not PPV sources. So the PPV files have to be run through MKVMerge to clean them up and make them WD friendly.
