USB Ethernet Help

Postby Ian_J » Sat Jan 31, 2015 8:45 am

I've installed the firmware and the WDTV boots fine.

I've connected a USB to Ethernet adaptor I had laying round and I can see the IP address on the about tab of the WDTV

I can also see the WDTV on my router in the connected devices section.

I still cannot connect to the WDTV though from my PC.

What am I missing?

All I want to do is browse the attached hard drive so that I can remotely add/remove files.

You can connect through various ways to your WDTV. Which ones did you try?
1) ping result from your pc?
2) telnet result from your pc?
3) http result from your pc?

Thanks!

All I want to be able to do is browse the drive connected to the WDTV via the network or add/remove files via ftp.

I'm not sure what else you might need, but I guess the network bits of the live firmware are not part of the Gen1 firmware. You most likely need at least a ftp server (as an app.bin?), or samba sharing.

You'd have to search this subforum or wait for somebody with a gen 1 (Alicia?) to give you a hand...

How can I fix the "not found" error when I try to start the Web Management?

It follows /etc/init.d/S66apache2 start

I don't think Gen1 has the webend. Can you post the output of
Code: Select all
ls -l /etc/init.d/

Oh indeed, my bad, we are in the prehistoric section of the forum - Gen 1 indeed has "different" wdlxtv, but if I remember correctly, it does have opt.bin possibilities to add a lot of stuff. But I never had such a Gen 1, can't comment more.

there is a webend but it is an addon.

I think all the files needed are on my mediafire account, webserver and webserver-addons is what you are looking for

actually pretty much everything for the Gen1 is here, at least everything I have collected...

Code: Select all

Nice collection. I'll ask recliq to host it on his server as well.

Many thanks for everyones' help with this.

Basically I'm sick of having to move the hard drive around every time I want to put a new film or CD rip on from my desktop machine.

I was thinking of getting rid of the WDTV & getting a newer machine (Minix) that I can connect to our home network.

Then I saw the WDLXTV firmware with basic networking for a G1 and thought what the hell, I have a USB to Ethernet laying round let's give it a go.

All I'm looking for is the ability to add & remove files in the easiest way possible via a home network.

After all that here is the info requested ;-)
