Change disk format?

Postby Gary. » Sun Jan 22, 2012 6:54 am

Hi,

I have eventually got the new firware communicating with my network via the Belikin 140 wireless adapter.

Must admit that there are no decent tutorials out there, it's all a bit programmer speak and it's like assumed that you have a degree in linux. Good job I used to hold a job where I did a little linux work so it helped me out. Maybe I ought to write a tutorial in plain english.

Anyway, I'm transferring a movie from PC via ftp to the WDTV's connected NTFS drive. It's agonisingly slow. I expect it's somethingto do with NTFS. So, my question: Can I convert the 1Gb disk to a native linux format? If so, can this be done without removing the files?

do you mean 1TB drive, or do you still have the thumb drive plugged into the WDTV which is 1GB?

No you can't convert a NTFS filesystem to ext3 'on the fly'.
When you create a new filesystem you need to format it and to format a drive and to keep the data on the drive contradicts each other.
