UPNP Speed?

Postby leavethetvon » Sat Aug 04, 2012 5:50 pm

So I hope I don't get burned for this, but I promise I searched and didn't find the info I'm looking for, so I am creating my own post...
I'd simply like to know if anyone can tell me what kind of speeds I can expect from upnp. I've read elsewhere that nfs is better for video even than upnp, which I had assumed would be as good if not better.
I'm using an Asus nt-66u router for nas and I believe that it can only do upnp, cifs, or ftp, but not nfs. If anyone else has this set up, please let me know.
I'm using the djmount app to access the upnp share and it works for all but some 1080p files, which of course, I would like to get working if possible. I love the functionality otherwise, I just have those files that won't play without stuttering at scenes with heavy fx and whatnot.
I've got a Belkin g1000 usb wired lan adapter and I'm using the driver from here: http://forum.wdlxtv.com/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=3757
So is this the best I can do with my set up or is there any other tweak that might allow me to get those files running smooth?

Thanks a ton.

I don't have a Gen1 and never had, but I guess that the USB port on WDTV is the bottleneck. In this case there's not much you can do...
But as I said this is just a guess, maybe someone who actually onws a Gen1 can tell more.

Thanks much! If the usb was the bottleneck though, wouldn't it also have trouble playing from a directly connected external harddrive? It doesn't have any problems when I play the same 1080p files from the same hd if I connect it directly to the wdtv.
This is probably unrelated, but I have noticed that, at the main menu, it's apparently constantly scanning the usb device. Which doesn't make sense because the only usb device directly connected is the small 2gb one that I have djmount and config files on. Could this unnecessary process be taxing the system enough to cause playback issues? Does anyone have any idea why it's doing that btw?

That spinning wheel ; I also get that once in a while.
It's spinning but the USB light on the WDTV is constantly lit, so not flashing. And I don't hear/feel the HDD drive spinning....
Solution that has always worked for me : switch media library off and back on again. After a while, no more spinning wheel on your display ;)
