New WD Player - just a bit more confusion

Postby KAD » Wed May 28, 2014 12:42 pm

so just when you though WD media player confusion was bad enough

here's the newest device
a couple of places online seem to be calling in the WD personal media player
also officially it's the "WD TV Media Player"

in a nutshell
- looks exactly like the SMP
- hardware is unknown, but it's assumed to be the same as SMP
- removes Netflix
- adds miracast support
- Official SDK available for sideloading apps

for those of us in the US that use netflix, it's probably a bust
but for anybody oversea's (not needing netflix), this might be a good deal, depending what what type functionality you can add via apps

WD must have fired their Naming Department - all their products have the same names...

LOL, when I read "SDK" I thought "wow, have they really put something up to write kind of plugins?"

So I went and had a look at the "SDK"... it's merely a collection of HTML5/javascript hooks and functions which can be used to create "web apps" for WDTV. They are run on the internal browser we discovered long ago... so they just saved us some time searching for those functions and called it a "SDK".

In fact the SDK is just a bunch of small PDFs descibing the hooks, functions and structure of their web "apps".
