What would members recommend as replacement?

Postby rgalka » Sun Aug 11, 2013 10:28 am

So.. when my wd live plus dies... what do folks here recommend to replace it with? That is assuming that there is nothing new from b-rad.. he seems to have left the building ;O)

Is there anything out there to take the place of the WD live plus with the same and more capabilities of wdlxtv's lastest (and possibly last) release? Something as customizable... supports Thumbgen... etc... with all the tech support like we get here?

Just curious.

Thanks

bob

I also want to know this. There are so many obscure media players but so far I haven't seen anything close to WDLXTV.

For quite some time now I'm using a small mini PC (Zotac AD-10) running Linux with XBMC.

Recliq... can you explain that a little. What functionality do you get from it? Moviesheets?

I have been using a Zotac Zbox for almost a year now with XBMC. Love it. I wouldn't dream of goint back to anything else. I also have a Android Jynxbox. Slick as can be and cheap.

Moviesheets on the fly without any interaction on mypart.

Live sport streming including UFC

Sreaming of movies or TV shows from sites such as IceFilms, 1Channel and Noobroom.

I love it.

OK.. so now my head is spinning.. ;O)

I can see that XMBC is pretty slick... but now figuring out the hardware to put it on it way too confusing for me...

I already have a 7.2 audio system so I am not up to buying / building a complete home entertainment PC. I just want something that would run XMBC at a reasonable cost. I also want to be able to control it with one of my existing remotes. I don't want to hear about controlling with an app on my smart phone... don't have one, and currently have no need for one..

Why are those Zotacs so expensive and why are there 72 of them? Why do they have both usb3 AND usb2 ports?

Would an old Apple TV be advisable as an XMBC host?

Is it worthwhile to build one of those Rasberry pi things?

What is b-rad up to? I was waiting to hear what he was going to be offering up as a WDTV replacement... any one have any updates on that?

Thanks guys for any insights you may have.

Apple TV 1 and 2 can be jaibroken and therefore can run xbmc. There are some Android system that are similar to the AppleTV if you don't have a gen 1 or 2.

RaspberryPi is likely the cheapest alternative of the whole spectrum.

There are more android devices hitting the market everyday....all as good as the other.

If you have an old laptop or an old PC that will also do the trick and will likely work better than any other platforms.

For info you need to google for xbmc forums. The Hub is best for third party addon and great info on all of this.
