Google Reader ends July 1

Postby PaulF » Thu Mar 14, 2013 12:16 pm

I use Google Reader on my Android phone or PC a few times every day to check this sites RSS Smartfeed. I am really depressed that Google's spring cleaning axed Reader. Does anyone use a different news reader they can recommend? I guess I am going to need an Android podcast player, too. Google Listen is also gone.

Yeah, I'm also bummed because of this. Google Reader was my favorite procrastination tool at work :( I mostly used it to follow new threads on this forum. I don't have a replacement ready so I don't know how I'll cope... A standard RSS reader will only get you what the RSS provides, not keep a record of past articles so you can go back and see older unread items (P.S. It might be a good moment to increase this forum's RSS number of items from 20 to something more appropriate - like 200).

For podcasts I use Podcast Addict https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bambuna.podcastaddict&hl=en and it does pretty much what I need (I like the auto-delete feature for played podcasts).

Yeah, it's a shame... and basically rises the question what (free) tools google cancels next.
I guess if they had made it a payed service instead, a lot of poeple would happily pay a small fee to keep this service, I know a lot of poeple using Reader which are quite annoyed right now...

That is very good point I had not thought about. It also kind of explains why they getting rid of it. They must have huge amounts of storage for everyone's reading history. I like the fact that their server's API kept my read/unread history synched between my PC and my phone. A couple of companies are claiming they have replacements:

http://www.engadget.com/2013/03/13/feedly-rss-service-promises-seamless-transition-after-google-r/

I'm hoping DIGG means they will keep my reading history when they say they will copy the Google Reader API.

If you find a good replacement, let me know. I don't need my history, but I'd like to have a functional web-based reader (otherwise my productivity will skyrocket!)...

My Firefox home page is http://www.google.com and the page no longer has a "Reader" link. reader.google.com still works, though.

@mad_ady thanks for the lifehacker link. I may try "Old Reader" for awhile.

Maybe this could be adapted to use your WDTVs as RSS feeds:

Hm looks quite nice...
Only dependency problem might be php5-mod-mysql, although I have a working one for WDTV it's not part of any firmware right now...
On the other side I guess it's not too hard to patch the code to use SQlite.

Yeah, I think MySQL is overkill for that kind of application. If the application is well written it might be easy to modify. Could be all bundled up in a nice app.bin after that.
