if it's not compiled from GPL code then what did you compile it from

at least for Live and Hub
WD encrypts/signs the firmware

and if firmware is loaded without the proper encryption signature key
then it permanently erases any premium content keys for online services

I would suspect this would be the same for the WD Play, but who knows, I don't have one, so I've never looked into it

i have tried compile from GPL sources, but get errors (file BM_KPI.sh not exists, this is incomplete sources as I understand).
And even in case of successful compilation of a GPL code you receive a defective firmware in which there will be lost a lot of functionality.

If you can read the contents of /etc/shadow you can probably reverse the password. Try to search the hash in google first - it might be something simple. Or try to run john the ripper to try a brute force attack. Or, better yet, if you can flash that area, simply replace the hash with your prefered password.

if there's passwd issues and this is just a modified stock, I suspect similiar issue that I had when setting up
SMP firmware here http://forum.wdlxtv.com/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=8707
take a look at
/etc/init.d/S20passwords

even if you can get into official firmware, passwd files are recreated new on each boot
solution is simlink to /conf
as /conf is persistant accross reboots

or run telnet unsecurred like this

telnetd -l /bin/sh
and it will not ask for a passwd

KAD is right, you can't change passwords because it's either a) located in ROM or b) generated on boot (in ramdisk?!?).
I can't tell what it's like on Play but most likely there is a small writable area in the flash to store config settings
(on WDTV Live etc it's /conf). You need to locate this area and replace the passwd and shadow files int /etc with links to these
files in the writeable aerea (eg on Live /conf).
