can't change $PATH variable via script

This is the place to ask for how to use software that is (or isn't) included in the various wdlxtv flavours. Questions about software such as rtorrent, NZBGet, sshfs, curlftpfs, ssh, telnet, etc.

Regarding the incompatible cramfs - we could convert all the apps to ext3 and that would solve the issue (drop support for cramfs maybe).
Regarding apps that should be marked as incompatible, we could add the maximum firmware version they can run on to 1.06 (so that they would run on the last version for live/plus).

actually WAM is already marking all app.bin's as incompatible due
<model>LIVE</model>
<model>PLUS</model>
so the max firmware entry is not needed in this case

but app-plugman-web will still allow download from cmd line, that's what I've been using for download, because WAM does not allow download
however, if an incompatible app.bin is already found on thumbdrive, then WAM will allow enable/disable
WAM just does not allow download

after sitting on this for a day, I will not enable download of incompatible app.bins
I think there will be too many problems
users will download, it will not run without changes 90% of the time
it's not worth the 10%

if they really want to try it, they can use app-plugman-web from cmd line

KAD is absolutely right and it was designed that way (including the app-plugman-web behaviour) using commandline is like the expert option "I know what I'm doing..."
I think we can simply update the working app-bins by adding <device>SMP</device>, of course WAM has to be patched to use this as well and display only compatible apps.

Regarding missing libraries: this is not surprising atall, go and compare the libs present in stock Live fw and WDLXTV, many libraries were already added by b-rad and those are probably missing on SMP.

so here's what I'm hearing

since I've got svn rights to app.bin repo's
I should patch FileLoop.app.bin - the one working app.bin to include SMP as compatible device
and add libraries required for vim to firmware
then patch the application.xml as well to list SMP as compatible device

that way we'll have 2 working app.bin's to test with

then I'll need to patch WAM to only display compatible app.bin's

once that is done, I should post it up to beta forum,
I'm not hopefull that we'll get many beta testers

but with this many changes, I think some sort of beta testing is better that just pushing it public without any testing

Yea, I think we have to rewrite the firmware version checking when we extend the app-bin repo for SMP. RIght now it should be ok the way you proposed, by ignoring version on SMP.
