rtorrent slow ?

This is the place to ask for how to use software that is (or isn't) included in the various wdlxtv flavours. Questions about software such as rtorrent, NZBGet, sshfs, curlftpfs, ssh, telnet, etc.

rtorrent slow ?

Postby mrdue40 » Mon Nov 18, 2013 12:50 pm

a question for my information:
torrents on the wdtv live with wdlxtv firmware achieve a download speed 3 to 4 times slower than on the pc.

it doesnt seem to be cpu speed, i can play HD stream (e.g. Dark Knight, 8-12 megabytes per second) without any issue.

so what is stopping rtorrent from going over 500kb per second ??

I got like 10x your speed on linux distributions with over 50k seeders... Can you share: your Live firmware & rtorrent version so other users can comment.

You might have a physical issue (check your cabling!), to verify, hook your pc to the very ethernet cable and rerun your test.

Actually the problem is the WDTV platform. It has a rather mediocre CPU and is low on RAM (200MB before DMAOSD starts, ~20MB in normal operation). It can play high quality video because it is a dedicated computing platform - it has hardware components used for media playback. Your PC (a general purpose computing platform) has to do media playback in software, that's why it needs more resources to do the same thing (but software is more flexible and can be easily upgraded).

I haven't used rtorrernt on the wdtv, but I remember reports of performance around 500-700 kbps.

With both rtorrent versions (the one built in the firmware, and the other version 0.9.2 which runs off my 500GB passport hard drive ext3 formatted) I get about twice your speed (1000-1200 kb/s which is my max download speed). I only download one file at a time (all other files are stopped no downloading or seeding), and limit my upload speed to <50kb/s (100 kb/s is my max upload speed). I use wireless connection and my router is about 10 metres away from the WD Live with no walls between them.
You should check if you have all the ports rtorrent uses open in your router.
Also you might have to tweak your rtorrent settings ("Download" and "Connection" tabs) maybe limit some options there to lessen the CPU usage.

WD Live working almost non-stop for about 3 whole years now, downloaded with rtorrent and played hundreds of movies, minimum power consumption, most useful device I've bought the last years. :D
Many thanks to B-rad and all the people who contributed all this time.
