rtorrent and magnet links

This is the place to ask for how to use software that is (or isn't) included in the various wdlxtv flavours. Questions about software such as rtorrent, NZBGet, sshfs, curlftpfs, ssh, telnet, etc.

rtorrent and magnet links

probably a dumb question, but is there any support for magnet links in rtorrent - the general trend seems to be away from torrent files (TPB seems to have abandoned them)?
or is the only solution to move to Transmission?

The Google magic 8-ball says: rtorrent 0.8.7 is required, and even yet it's unclear how it works.

Same question here. rtorrent seems to recognize the magnet urls, but then nothing happens. Regular torrent files work fine for me so I don't think it's a networking issue.

I am trying to update rtorrent to be able to use magnet links.
I have failed so far and I feel that I hit a wall.

I tried these 2 paths:
- binaries from Debian wheezy (rtorrent, libtorrert and required libraries). I collected all the binaries and created an app.bin.
- compiling rtorrent source from their git repository in the wdtv debian-squeeze image. The rtorrent binary could run in the debian-squeeze image. I copied the rtorrent binary to an app.bin. I also had to copy libtorrent binary. Then ldd showed a dependency for libc-2.11.3.so.
Code: Select all
# ldd /apps/rtorrent_0.9.2/bin/rtorrent
/apps/rtorrent_0.9.2/bin/rtorrent: /lib/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.11' not found (required by /apps/rtorrent_0.9.2/lib/libtorrent.so.14)

(/lib/libc.so.6 -> libc-2.11.3.so)

In both cases, including libc-2.11.3.so in the app.bin renders wdtv non-bootable. I assume that fundamental programs use a previous incompatible version during boot.
Is this solvable?

Thanks,

Martin

Hey Martin,

I too ran into the dreaded missing GLIBC_2.11 problem when compiling rtorrent 0.9.2 in the debian squeeze chroot.

Tried the LD_LIBRARY_PATH stuff to force it to use the new libc from squeeze but got no love there either so I took another tack. To quote the man himself:

well it sounds like glibc 2.11 has symbols that don't exist in 2.8. That isn't easily gotten around, solution is to produce a lenny image to chroot into.

So I did that. Not a terrible process but they're hiding lenny in the archive now... http://archive.debian.org/debian/dists/lenny/

Pretty much followed this info http://wdtvforum.com/main/index.php?topic=3303.0

Once that was all set up I did manage to successfully compile the most recent libtorrent and rtorrent in the lenny chroot and it runs! Wild stuff, I know...

I only got this going as the sun was coming up last night/this morning so I just now checked the rutorrent web interface and it is connecting but tossing some errors and doing some strange things so I'm not quite ready to share what I've cooked up, want to investigate this stuff first.

I can put the lenny image somewhere though if you want to try to compile in there yourself, just lmk!

Apparently the problems are all due to old xmlrpc-c package which can't deal with numbers larger than 2G.

Will need to compile rtorrent again after I compile a new xmlrpc-c... at least I'm getting lots of practice ;)

Thanks workingman!

I will wait a little bit and see your results. I am quite busy because of my job right now.

Wow... done by 2am! Banner day.. I might actually get a decent night's sleep :)

Just downloaded my first magnet link from thar PB and it's INCOMING! hot and fast already.. avast ye torrents I be supportin yar magnet links! :D

No more errors about ratio plugin or weird math probs after cooking up xmlrpc-c from source (http://xmlrpc-c.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/xmlrpc-c/super_stable/?view=tar) I did like the sound of super_stable since I didn't want to have to compile rtorrent a third time (it wanted >1.11 and super stable is 1.16).

# hostname
WDLXTV
# rtorrent -h
Rakshasa's BitTorrent client version 0.9.2.

I can make an app.bin for you or just send the rtorrent binary and libtorrent.so.14.0.4, whichever you'd prefer. I'm running the ext3-boot version so I just replaced the /usr/bin/rtorrent with mine, stuck libtorrent in /usr/lib and made the appropriate links. Easy peasy lemon squeezy.
