[REQUEST] BBC iPlayer support

This is the place to ask for how to use software that is (or isn't) included in the various wdlxtv flavours. Questions about software such as rtorrent, NZBGet, sshfs, curlftpfs, ssh, telnet, etc.

[REQUEST] BBC iPlayer support

Postby mjrmjr » Mon Jun 13, 2011 11:12 am

Hi All,

I was just wondering if anyone had any plans to make an iPlayer plugin for the WDLXTV software (iPlayer is the TV-on demand service of the UK's BBC TV stations). There is a multiplatform perl / cgi app out there using RTMPdump (http://www.infradead.org/get_iplayer/html/get_iplayer.html) but I don't have any appropropriate experience to port this to the WD TV. Is this possible? I suppose one problem is that development is restricted to those that have a UK IP address, but are there any other major stumbling blocks? It would a huge difference to UK users...

best wishes,

M

It's on my infamous list

I would love to put an iPlayer plug-in together being an expat living with the septics; but, the Beeb has a pretty good lock on the content outside the UK

I tried the XBMC Dharma plug-in and that got me nowhere, these are usually a good launching point for reverse engineering but that effort panned out

There are rumors of the Beeb offering a pay for content international version so maybe that'll lead to some workable solution for those of us needing some quality programing from auntie ;)

Oh and ITV Player is on the list too, same problems as with the iPlayer though.

If I do get something up and running then it would most likely be a two box implementation, same as the SVTPlay and PBS plug-ins - won't actually know until I can get to the content though

If I do get a workable experiment going I'll post to the plug-ins thread for folks to provide feedback

And if there is anyone in the UK that wants to take a crack at the solution then I'd recommend grabbing the XBMC plug-in as a starting point and getting your and reverse engineering the default.py code
If you like the work I do please feel free to make a donation to the Red Cross
